Why is it called Black Friday?
14:45 , Daisy LesterBlack Friday is the biggest sales event of the year. It falls on the fourth Friday of November (the day after Thanksgiving in the US), and is seen as the best time to snap up deals ahead of Christmas. Typically, discounts will continue right through the weekend, until Cyber Monday.
As for the name, it refers to being “in the black”, which in accounting terms means making a profit. “In the red” in comparison, means losing money. By the 1980s, retailers had dubbed the huge surge of Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving as Black Friday, as it pushed shops from “red” to “black”. It’s as simple as that.

Traditionally, Cyber Monday was a special day reserved for online shopping – but now, of course, the entire sale can be shopped online. It’s your last chance to shop the deals. In the past, we’ve seen some of the biggest price cuts on tech during Cyber Monday.

Better yet, if you’re planning to travel Europe by train, Interrail has launched its biggest sale of the year with 25 per cent off train passes. Th discount is on the “all-you-can-travel” range of Interrail “Global” passes – covering 32 European nations, from Finland to Portugal and Ireland to Turkey.
An entry level pass covering four days of travel within one month is priced at for €212 (£186) in second class. An additional day – ie five days in a month – adds about £24 to the cost, and works out at just £42 per day.

Traditionally, it was a special day reserved for onlineshopping – but now, of course, the entire sale can be shopped online.
