Human rights activist and lawyer Siti Kasim has openly challenged the belief that Islam is under threat if non-Muslims govern Malaysia, emphasizing that her own success was made possible by the British government. Reacting to recent claims by radical Muslim preacher Zakir Naik and others, she dismissed the notion that non-Muslim leadership would oppress Muslims or undermine Islam.
In a passionate video, Siti reflected on her 17-year experience in the United Kingdom, where she was granted the same rights as any citizen despite being a Muslim in a non-Muslim-majority country. “It’s simply untrue that non-Muslim rulers will strip Muslims of their rights or attempt to destroy Islam,” she asserted. “I live in UK for 17 years and therefore I know best how I was treated by the orang kafir. The very fact that I received my degree was also due to the orang kafir. It’s the kafir British government which paved the way for me to obtain my law degree.”
Her comments were triggered by a viral video from Ustaz Mat Esa Deraman titled Hidden Agenda of the Infidels, which she condemned as an example of extreme and ignorant thinking. According to her, such views reflect the mindset of individuals who have never lived outside their narrow cultural bubble.
Siti did not hold back in criticizing Ustaz Mat Esa, “I truly hope thee type of preachers will be clamped down by our authorities or refrained altogether from giving rubbish public talk for he doesn’t have the right to condemn people outside his race and religion."
Siti’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate in Malaysia about religious tolerance and the role of non-Muslims in governance. While some believe that Islamic values are at risk under non-Muslim leadership, others like Siti Kasim argue that such fears are baseless and only serve to divide the nation further.
