KUALA LUMPUR - Tengku Muda of Pahang, Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah, has revealed that he had recommended the seven heritage players, who are now under investigation and suspension by FIFA to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) for consideration to join the national team.

In a statement today made available to Scoop, Tengku Muda emphasised that all recommendations were made in good faith and through legitimate procedures, with the aim of strengthening the Harimau Malaya squad in line with the aspiration to elevate the standard of Malaysian football.

“All seven of these players are legitimate Malaysian citizens, having obtained citizenship through proper legal processes in accordance with the laws of the country,” he said.

According to Tengku Abdul Rahman, several agents had approached him since late 2024 to introduce players for evaluation. The proposed names were then forwarded to FAM for further assessment to determine their eligibility as heritage players.

“Every recommendation was made with the sincere intention of helping to strengthen the national squad and to create opportunities for Malaysian-blooded talents abroad to serve their homeland,” he added.

Tengku Muda also pointed out that the introduction of naturalised and heritage players was not new, as similar efforts had previously taken place at club level.

“Pahang, too, was once involved in the naturalisation of several players such as Mohamadou Sumareh, Sergio Aguero and Lee Tuck. That initiative was undertaken to strengthen Harimau Malaya and to give the coaching staff more tactical options,” he said.

He commended His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Ismail, the Regent of Johor for the latter's vision and efforts in elevating the standard of Malaysian football.

He pointed out the remarkable success of Johor Darul Ta’zim FC (JDT), which is now regarded as the benchmark of professionalism and modern football management in the country.

“Inspired by His Royal Highness’s vision and determination, I too feel compelled to play my part and contribute towards strengthening the Malaysian national team,” said Tengku Muda.

He concluded by reaffirming his full support for any initiative that could help uplift the standard of Malaysian football.

“I believe the inclusion of naturalised and heritage players can enhance the team’s quality and competitiveness. Any effort that contributes to the advancement of Malaysian football will always have my support,” he said. - October 24, 2025
