Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has ignited a political firestorm with his recent remarks, branding Muafakat Nasional (MN) Chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa as “crazy” amidst discussions over development projects in Sungai Bakap, Penang. The exchange has intensified ahead of crucial by-elections, raising eyebrows and drawing sharp criticism from various quarters.

In a press statement following the Mara Educator Awards Day event, Zahid clarified that his earlier comments regarding project allocations were merely suggestions, not promises. He highlighted the need to revive a Tamil National Type School (SJKT) project and establish a Senior Citizen Activity Center (PAWE) in Sungai Bakap, asserting that allocations were available but redirected elsewhere previously.

"I suggested that the allocations be redirected to benefit the residents of Nibong Tebal, particularly in Sungai Bakap, where Indian children need educational facilities at SJKT," Zahid explained to the media.

However, his remarks didn't go unnoticed by Annuar Musa, who characterized Zahid's statements as potentially coercive towards voters. Annuar criticized Zahid for insinuating that projects would only proceed if the electorate favored Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Joohari Ariffin in the upcoming by-election.

Annuar's response underscores the contentious nature of Zahid's statements, accusing him of leveraging developmental projects as political tools to sway voter sentiment. This exchange has injected additional tension into the political landscape, particularly in Sungai Bakap, where local sentiments are crucial ahead of the polls.

Shifting focus to another electoral district, Zahid addressed preparations for the upcoming Nenggiri state constituency by-election. He emphasized the consultative process within Umno's Gua Musang Division, indicating that the selection of a candidate hinges on qualities deemed essential by the local community.

"In Gua Musang, tradition dictates that candidates undergo internal scrutiny to ensure they possess the 'WALI' factor — winnable, accepted, and liked by the electorate," Zahid stated. He assured that the candidate selection process would be finalized before the nomination period, aligning with the Election Commission's schedule for the by-election on August 17.

The upcoming electoral contests are pivotal for both political coalitions, with parties maneuvering to secure crucial seats amidst shifting voter sentiments and public scrutiny. Zahid's strategic maneuvering and statements underscore the high stakes involved in these electoral battles, where each decision and pronouncement can influence voter perceptions and outcomes.
