Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described his years in prison as the most defining chapter of his life, one that revealed the deep flaws within the justice system and strengthened his resolve to ensure that no one else endures the same hardship.

Speaking during the In Conversation with Anwar Ibrahim session at the PNB Knowledge Forum 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar reflected on the more than ten years he spent behind bars and how those years exposed him to the harsh realities of inequality within the legal system. He said his time in confinement opened his eyes to how laws can be manipulated for political purposes and how individuals from poorer backgrounds are often left defenseless while the powerful escape accountability.

He recounted witnessing a young man, bruised and shackled, who had been jailed for months simply for stealing a pair of jeans because he could not afford a lawyer. The experience, he said, underscored the injustice of a system that punished the poor harshly while allowing those involved in large-scale corruption to rise in rank and status.

Anwar contrasted the treatment of common offenders with that of political elites, noting that those implicated in multi-billion-ringgit scandals often went unpunished, even rewarded with honorary titles. He admitted that while he now holds the highest office, his years in prison continue to shape his empathy for those suffering under unfair circumstances.

He further observed that many judges and legal practitioners interpret the law strictly by its technicalities, losing sight of the essence of justice itself. While acknowledging the importance of firm punishment for serious crimes such as sexual assault, Anwar urged that compassion and context must also guide legal decisions, particularly in cases involving vulnerable individuals such as migrant workers deceived by agents and subsequently imprisoned.

Anwar said that enduring prison life taught him the true meaning of freedom, fairness, and empathy—values he believes must form the foundation of governance and public service. The hardship, he reflected, tested not only him but also his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and their children.

Now as Prime Minister, Anwar vowed to channel those painful lessons into meaningful reforms, emphasizing that no individual should ever again be subjected to the kind of injustice he once faced.
