I tested Space NK’s 12 days of luxury advent calendar to see if it’s truly worth it

Seeing double? You’re not going crazy, Space NK has already released a 25-day beauty advent calendar (which we think ranks high among the other best calendars this year) but the retailer has a second that is for the luxury lovers among us. The original isn’t short on luxe names like Augustinus Bader, La Mer and Lisa Eldridge, but for high-end beauty devotees, the Space NK 12 days of luxury might be where your attention rests.

The luxury calendar features brands like Sisley-Paris, Armani, YSL Beauty and Westman Atelier and is worth £1,500, despite only consisting of 12 days. In comparison the main countdown is 25 days and has a value of more than £1,200 – so the high value skincare, make-up and bodycare is really packed into the luxe version. Indeed, inside the luxury calendar there are 24 products, so you can expect two items behind each door. That being said, at a substantial £410, the price is proving controversial.

Now that it’s available to shop, here’s my verdict, after unboxing every door, on whether it’s worth its steep price tag.

Space NK 12 days of luxury advent calendar

Rating: 4/5

Worth: £1,500

Number of days: 12

Number of products: 24 (18 full-sizes)

Highlights: YSL Beauty touché éclat blur primer, Westman Atelier the powder duos in fizz + jam, Chantecaille lip chic in bourbon rose

Why we love it

  • Big names galore
  • Equipped with everything you'll need to give your full-body some TLC

Take note

  • Significantly more expensive than other £1,000+ value calendars
  • Limited make-up selection

Any beauty advent calendar feels like a treat, but the Space NK’s 12 days of luxury looks like it has that extra wow factor. Before delving into the product list, it seems like a good deal with 24 items worth £1,500. Space NK says 18 of them are full sized but I can only count 13 plus the make-up bag and sleep mask, which makes me a little dubious. It also costs £410 which is far more than Liberty’s £285 luxury calendar and pips Jo Malone’s £375 advent calendar – putting it firmly in the premium category.

The skincare is high-end and hard-working (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

Judging by the list, big names in luxury haven’t just been thrown in but are seen across are hard-working skincare and polished make-up products. With 111Skin repair serum, Sisley black rose cream and La Mer renewal oil, the advent calendar is targeted at those after smoothing, cellular repair, texture refinement, and skin firming from their routine. There are products offering deep hydration and skin barrier support too, with Tatcha the essence, Omorovicza queen mist, and a La Prairie cleanser.

Make-up wise, it’s a curated luxury edit that will offer an effortless, polished look with Westman Atelier’s powder duo, Chantecaille’s lip chic, and an Armani eye tint among the line-up.

In terms of its value, the Augustinus Bader the eyebrow and lash enhancing serum is worth £125 alone, the Eighth Day resurfacing toner pads are £105 and the Sisley-Paris black rose skin infusion cream is usually £122.

The Oribe shampoo minis feel a bit like filler (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

Products I’m less fussed about are the mini Oribe shampoo and conditioner, the mini Aespo body cleanser, the silk eye mask and the Space NK mini travel bag as they feel like filler, though might suit the frequent flyers among us.

Online, some shoppers feel the price cannot be justified and are disappointed with the products included. In particular, customers aren’t happy with the travel minis and one person posted on the Space NK website that they’d rather have 12 “awesome products than a collection of 24 they can’t shift”. Another, however, sees the calendar as a cost-effective way to restock on luxury items.

Is the Space NK luxury advent calendar worth it?

Space NK’s 12 days of luxury delivers serious glamour, packed with heavy-hitting skincare and polished makeup from Augustinus Bader, Sisley, and La Mer. The high-performance formulas easily justify its target audience, and key full-sized heroes provide undeniable value against its steep price tag.

However, at £410, it commands a major premium over luxury rivals, making the inclusion of travel-sized washables and lifestyle fillers feel slightly hard to swallow. If you are looking to restock high-end favourites at a overall saving, it is a glorious indulgence; otherwise, the price tag might sting.
