In a poignant and symbolic ceremony at Kuala Lumpur Tower, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad unveiled a time capsule that had been sealed for more than 28 years. Originally buried on October 1, 1996, during the inauguration of the iconic Menara Kuala Lumpur, the capsule was meant to be opened in 2020. However, delays—including the COVID-19 pandemic—postponed its unveiling until now.
The time capsule was part of the Vision 2020 initiative, a national development plan championed by Dr Mahathir during his tenure. The contents were selected to capture the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of a nation on the brink of transformation into a developed country by the year 2020.
As he opened the capsule, Tun Mahathir revealed a collection of artifacts from the mid-90s, including photographs of the KL Tower’s construction, old RM2 banknotes, promotional posters, photographic films, newspaper advertisements, and video compact discs (VCDs).
Joining Dr Mahathir at the event were his wife, Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, and fellow former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The moment was especially moving for Dr Mahathir, who at nearly 100 years old, expressed both surprise and gratitude at being present to open the capsule himself.
“I didn't think I'd be here to see what's inside ... thought I'd be gone by now,” he joked.
One of the most touching moments came when Dr Mahathir read a poem that had been preserved inside the capsule.
The event served not only as a trip down memory lane but also as a reflection on the nation’s journey since Vision 2020 was first introduced. While the original goals may have evolved over time, the time capsule stood as a powerful symbol of Malaysia’s enduring pursuit of growth and unity.
As KL Tower continues to stand tall over the city skyline, the memories unearthed from its base remind Malaysians of the dreams that once defined a generation—and the legacy that continues to inspire.
