The best fake tans can deliver a holiday-worthy glow without the need for a plane ticket (or the UV rays). Over the past decade, I’ve watched the tanning industry evolve dramatically, with formulas becoming more advanced, versatile and easier to use than ever. My top picks now range from quick-drying mists and mousses to buildable gradual lotions and fast-acting express tans.
To find the best fake tan formulas for 2026, I consulted self-tanning expert James Read. “For lighter skin tones, a gradual tan is ideal, as it allows you to build your glow. For darker skin tones, a mousse works well, or you can use a gradual tan to build your desired shade,” he advised.
Celebrity tanner Sophie Evans added that “mousse self-tans are a good all-round formula that suits all. However, if you have dry/dehydrated or sensitive skin, you may prefer a lotion”, as they are “generally more hydrating, and we can pack the formula with serious anti-ageing skincare”.
Trusted names like Bondi Sands and St Tropez remain favourites for fuss-free mousses, while Tan Luxe, Isle of Paradise and Bali Body are my picks for quick-developing express tans. For a more subtle, hydrating glow, Gatineau and Dove’s gradual lotions are worth considering.
My desert island pick is a clear water tan. It won’t stain your sheets, dries quickly and fades evenly – which is why Bare By Vogue takes the top spot in this review. Keep reading for more of the best fake tans.

Bare By Vogue clean tan water
Best: fake tan overall
Why we love it
- Doesn’t stain sheets
- Natural colour
- Fast-drying
- Fades nicely
Take note
- Small bottle
This is, without a doubt, the best fake tan I’ve tested – and I’ve tried more than my fair share over the years. Infused with skin-loving ingredients, the lightweight formula is super nourishing and hydrating. While the mousse comes out clear, application is a breeze, thanks to the glistening residue it leaves behind, which acts like a guiding colour.

A little goes a long way, and it’s quick-drying, transfer-free and not sticky, so you can apply it any time of day without staining your clothes and sheets, or feeling uncomfortable. Developing in around six hours, the final finish is fully natural-looking – it leaves me perfectly bronzed and streak-free, with not a hint of orange or any green undertones. I used the dark shade option, but it also comes in a more understated medium.
Lasting up to six days – or longer with daily moisturising – it fades nicely without any patchiness or dryness. I’ve pressed it into the hands of countless friends, who are now just as obsessed. My only gripe is that it doesn’t come in a bigger bottle, but it’s a great price, considering the premium formula.

DoveSpa gradual self-tan body lotion
Best: budget-friendly fake tan
Why we love it
- Hydrating
- Easy to apply
- Enhances natural or fake tan base
A great all-rounder for less than £5, Dove’s gradual tanning formula punches above its price as the best budget fake tan I’ve tried. Building a natural glow with minimal effort, it’s as easy to apply as your go-to body moisturiser. The clear formula can be applied with your hands, gliding effortlessly across skin and leaving a flattering, glistening finish. It’s both quick-drying and non-staining, meaning you can apply it before bed with no risk of staining your sheets or clothes.

I love the subtle scent (good for those who don’t like the biscuit-like smell of fake tan), and the lightweight, moisturising formula leaves skin smooth, supple, and streak-free. You’ll see sun-kissed results within four hours, with a deeper tan developing over time. I use the medium to dark shade, but there’s also a light to medium for a more subtle tan.
Delivering a radiant glow when applied on clean skin, it also helps sustain a real tan or deepen an existing fake tan (it’s my non-negotiable airport beauty buy when going on holiday). If you’re after an affordable fast-track to an understated glow, Dove’s budget buy is hard to beat.

Self Glow by James Read sunrise to sundown tinted tan serum
Best: serum fake tan
Why we love it
- Nourishing
- Skin-blurring
Take note
- Expensive
Offering the best of both worlds, the Self Glow by James Read tanning serum gives you an instant tint before developing more deeply over a couple of hours. The result is natural-looking, bronzed and nourished skin. You can apply this formula with a mitt or your hands (I prefer a mitt for more even coverage), with the lightweight serum blending easily. A little goes a long way (a plus, considering the price), with a guiding colour helping with a flawless finish.

Infused with hyaluronic acid for hydration, fermented mushrooms for soothing, aloe vera, and plant-based DHA for a radiance boost, it really does replicate the holiday glow. It doesn’t transfer to sheets or clothes and dries quickly, leaving skin smooth and softened.
The longer you leave it on before showering, the deeper your tan is, and the colour is easily buildable. I’d recommend applying the gradual lotion (£44, Spacenk.com) a couple of days after the initial application as this really prolongs the glow.

Coco & Eve sunny honey bronzing foam
Best: hydrating mousse fake tan
Why we love it
- Hydrating on dry skin
- Lovely scent
- Skin blurring
- No orange tint
Take note
- Can feel sticky after initial application
Coco & Eve’s sunny honey formula is great for those who tend to avoid mousses owing to dryness or patchiness. The brand’s mousse is super hydrating, thanks to nourishing ingredients, while the tanning DHA active is naturally derived making it kinder to skin (particularly sensitive skin). It’s effortless to apply with a guide colour – and don’t be put off by the green undertones, as this works to counteract any orange tones in the tanning formula.

The tan dries quickly, though is slightly sticky so I’d suggest applying this one before bed rather than in the morning. Between six to eight hours later, you wake up with a rich, deep tan that can be washed off for a natural-looking tone.
Skin feels soft and supple after use, with the colour enduring up to five days. It doesn’t fade into tiger bread, but does require a lot of scrubbing to remove it before applying a fresh layer. The scent is particularly heavenly, too, with tropical notes of mango and guava scent (a far cry from the biscuit scents we’re used to).

Sculpted by Aimee body base matte instant tan
Best: instant fake tan
Why we love it
- Natural colour
- No transfer
- Doesn't fade patchy
Take note
- The bottle doesn't last very long
Instant tan formulas can be tricky to perfect, but Sculpted by Aimee’s body base has nailed the brief. It’s available in a light and medium shade (I tested the medium) and effortlessly blends across skin with a brush or mitt. My preferred method is with a brush – you can top up your tan, define certain areas and even fix fake tan mishaps by filling patches in.

Unlike other instant formulas, this one doesn’t leave a shimmery finish. Though this can be flattering, it's a tell-tale sign that you’re wearing fake tan. Instead, the Sculpted by Aimee matte formula imparts a rich, natural tan that makes skin look healthy and toned.
It’s not sticky and dries fast, with hyaluronic acid and shea butter leaving skin feeling soft. You can dress almost immediately with almost no transfer to clothes. I found that you’ll see some marks on light-coloured clothes, but thankfully, these come out in the wash. The real test? I applied it before a gig in the evening and woke up the next morning with the tan looking just as even and pigment-rich as it did when I first applied it. Better yet, there’s SPF 30 sun protection, which gives you peace of mind on holiday, too. My only gripe is the 100ml tube, which you’ll get through very quickly.

Tan Luxe express mousse
Best: clear fake tan
Why we love it
- Natural-looking colour
- Easy to apply
- Hydrating
Take note
- Expensive
If you’re looking for a golden glow by lunchtime, apply Tan Luxe’s express mousse first thing in the morning. Developing into a bronzed finish within just two hours, it can be left on for even longer for a deeper shade. The tan is fuss-free to apply, thanks to the foam consistency and clear formula, which glides across skin easily and doesn’t transfer onto clothes.

This formula is also fast-drying, so you can get on with your day without that horrible sticky feeling. The scent is inoffensive, with light floral notes, while the colour is natural-looking, without a hint of orange.
I found that my skin continued to feel soft for a couple of days after application, but the tan did begin to fade unevenly after day four, which is a shame, considering the price. If you’re looking for an express tan for your weekend plans, though, you can’t fault how fast this one develops.

Bondi Sands ultra express fake tan
Best: mousse fake tan
Why we love it
- Easy to apply
- Deep, natural-looking tan
Take note
- Can be drying, so those with particularly dry skin should avoid
Despite trying more luxurious and expensive fake tan brands on the market, I regularly return to the Aussie brand Bondi Sands. Its self-tanning foams were among the first formulas I ever tried – and this new express reformulation has become a new favourite. The formula is only available in ultra dark, so it’s not a tan for beginners or those wanting a light touch. Just like the rest of the foam range, it has a guide colour which is helpful for even coverage.

The consistency is lightweight and it dries quickly, so you can put clothes on within 10 minutes. While it says you can wash off within an hour, I find that leaving it on overnight or for at least four hours during the day results in the best, natural-looking tan.
However, the tan does tend to cling to any rough patches it can dry out my skin after a couple of days. This can be avoided by moisturising dry areas ahead of application and daily afterwards, but the mousse is best avoided if you have particularly dry-prone skin. Costing less than £15, the 200ml bottle should last you a good while, too. If you’re after an affordable, fast-acting and ultra dark mousse, it’s well worth a try.

Gatineau golden glow gradual tan
Best: luxury fake tan
Why we love it
- Large tube
- Natural finish
- Easy to apply
- Long-lasting colour
Take note
- Expensive
Gatineau’s gradual tan has a cult following for good reason. It’s pricey, but the 400ml bottle lasts you ages – I’ve had mine for nearly a year. The lightweight cream-based formula glides on easily and absorbs in less than three minutes.

Containing a blend of bronzing pigments and low-level tanning actives, the lotion gave my skin a toned and smooth look straight after initial application, with a natural-looking tan developing within three hours. Plus, the nourishing formula left my body feeling moisturised and soft all day. The scent is equally gorgeous – think notes of pear and mandarin balanced by sandalwood and musk (there’s not a hint of that dreaded chocolate biscuit fragrance).
It leaves a natural and glowy colour, with the formula fading evenly over the course of a week. Alternatively, you can maintain the tan and build up the colour throughout the week, without it going patchy or streaky. The mini size is my favourite for throwing in hand luggage for holidays.

Bali Body deep violet express tan
Best: express fake tan
Why we love it
- Quick-drying
- Easy application
- Rich colour
Take note
- Expensive for a mousse
- Becomes patchy as it fades
- Not the easiest to scrub off
I was initially put off this Bali Body fake tan because of the price, which sits at the top end of the spectrum when it comes to self-tanners, but it seriously delivers as the best express tan I tested. The formula boasts an ultra-lightweight foam consistency that glides across skin with ease, while the violet-hued guide colour ensures streak-free, even coverage and no green or orange tinges.

It absorbs into the skin quickly with no sticky or greasy residue, so it can easily be applied in the morning. Thanks to the product’s inclusion of glycerin and vitamin E, my skin felt soft and hydrated after application, while the shea butter and pomegranate seed extra give it a deliciously summery scent.
It develops into a naturally glowy tan within two hours, but I prefer to leave it on for eight hours for a rich, deep tan. My skin continues to feel nourished while looking bronzed for up to four days. The only downside is the tan is prone to going patchy when it begins to fade and it isn’t the easiest to scrub off.

Your questions about fake tan answered
What is the best fake tan?
I’ve been raving to anyone who will listen about Bare By Vogue’s clear mousse tan. Hydrating, easy to apply and long-lasting, the clear formula leaves you with a natural-looking golden finish that can be built up as desired. Better yet, it fades evenly, with no tiger-bread patches.
When it comes to budget buys, Dove is a must-have in your tanning arsenal, whether you’re applying over an existing tan to prolong it or looking for a radiant glow. Meanwhile, Bali Body’s violet fake tan is among the best express formulas I’ve ever tried and Coco & Eve’s honey tan is perfect for those who tend to find mousses too drying.
How I tested fake tans
For context, I am naturally pale with skin that’s prone to dryness (particularly on the arms and legs), so I look for skin-nourishing ingredients in fake tan formulas that don’t dry out my skin further. All the bottles in this round-up leave skin feeling soft and smooth, rather than flaky and parched. Considering everything from ease of application to value for money, these are the fake tans that have secured a spot in my bathroom cabinet. When testing the best fake tans formulas, I assessed each bottle on everything from ease of application and longevity to colour and value for money:
How to apply fake tan
Different types of fake tan require different styles of application. For a mousse or spray and clear formulas, I exfoliate my body and apply lightweight lotion to my elbows, knees and hands (this helps reduce product piling on dry areas), before applying the formula with a mitt.
I also use a fake tan brush – my favourite is the Rose & Caramel one (£12, Amazon.co.uk) – to buff the product on my neck and hands. For gradual lotions and creams, exfoliation isn’t always necessary as the formulas are hydrating and nourishing. But, if I have existing fake tan on, I exfoliate that off before applying the gradual tan with my hands (like you would a body moisturiser).
What is the easiest fake tan to apply?
When it comes to tanning, gel-based formulas are the easiest to apply. They aren’t as streaky as a liquid but look more natural than a mousse, so they are a great starting point for beginners. With that being said, lotions and mousses are still easy to apply, as long as you exfoliate beforehand and use a tanning mitt.
What to look for in a self-tan
When choosing a tan, look for a non-biscuity scent, minimal transfer, hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or antioxidant oils such as rosehip oil, colour correcting actives to counteract any unwanted orange tones, fast-drying formulas and long-lasting colour pay-off.
How to remove fake tan
First up, invest in an exfoliator mitt. In the shower or bath, apply an exfoliating scrub and use the mitt in circular motions to slough away dead skin cells (and patchy tan). Follow up with a moisturiser to keep skin hydrated.
How long does fake tan last?
This all depends on the formula you’re using and how you treat your skin after tanning. To increase the longevity of your tan, be sure to moisturise daily. Before applying a fresh layer of tan, always exfoliate to give the formula a fresh canvas.
Mousse formulas tend to go patchy after four to five days (particularly on drier skin types), while lotions and gels tend to last longer and fade more naturally. However, there are exceptions to the rule here – read our detailed tan reviews above to find long-lasting formulas.
Should you moisturise before applying fake tan?
St Tropez’s celebrity tanner Sophie Evans emphasises the importance of moisturising your elbows, knees, hands, feet, back of heels and wrist crease, as well as any dry patches. “Moisturise these areas prior to application, to create a barrier that ensures the tan develops flawlessly.”
Prolonging your fake tan also comes down to moisturising. “I recommend applying a light moisturiser all over your face and body,” tanning guru James Read says. “Far from causing uneven tanning, it helps the tan absorb more evenly and last longer. Plus, it keeps your skin deeply hydrated.”
