A viral post is making its rounds on Facebook after an anonymous woman shared how she was overcharged at a petrol station — even though the system showed she was eligible for the RM1.99 fuel price. According to her post, she used her IC (MyKad) at the petrol pump to enjoy the government fuel subsidy. The screen displayed the word “LAYAK”, confirming that she qualified for the cheaper RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre.
But when she checked the receipt after refueling, she was shocked because the amount was still charged at RM2.60 per litre.
“I immediately went to the counter to ask, and the staff just said, ‘The payment has already been charged, we can’t change it,’” she wrote. “Excuse me? Then what does the word ‘layak’ even mean?” She described the experience as confusing and frustrating. During the process, there was no clear indication of whether she was actually being charged RM1.99 or RM2.60 until the transaction was completed. “It feels like opening a mystery box every time you refuel because you wouldnt know if you’re getting the cheaper price or not until it’s too late,” she said.
The woman also mentioned that she followed every step according to tutorials circulating online by inserting her IC, selecting RON95, and refueling correctly. Yet, she still ended up being charged the higher rate and she said that “All those online videos made it look so easy and foolproof,” she added. “But in reality, it’s not as perfect as they claim.”
Frustrated, she ended her post with a warning for others:
“Next time, just go directly to the counter to pay and swipe your IC. Don’t fully trust the machine when it says ‘LAYAK.’ You will never know if you’ll actually being charged at the price of RM1.99 or RM2.60. Dont risk it!”

Her post quickly gained traction among Malaysian drivers, many of whom shared similar stories in the comments. Some even claimed that this issue has happened multiple times but often goes unnoticed by those who don’t check their receipts.
The takeaway?
Always double-check your receipt after refueling and when in doubt, deal directly with the counter staff instead of relying solely on the self-service machine.
