RANAU: Ice formations resembling icicle sticks were observed on grass at the Panalaban Substation in Taman Kinabalu on Thursday despite prolonged hot and dry conditions in the district.
Panalaban Substation Superintendent Julaimin Bin Kamin said in a Facebook post that the phenomenon was recorded on April 16 at an altitude of about 3,272.7 metres above sea level.
He said the formation was caused by dry weather and low air humidity in the Mount Kinabalu area throughout the week, leading to a significant temperature drop at high altitude and resulting in ice forming on plant surfaces around the Panalaban base camp.
He said such freezing is a natural occurrence in high altitude areas of Mount Kinabalu, particularly during clear and dry conditions when temperatures fall sharply from night to early morning.
He said climbers, guides, porters and staff are advised to dress appropriately for cold weather, maintain hydration and follow safety instructions, adding that Sabah Parks will continue monitoring weather and temperature conditions to ensure safety.
