Protests have erupted across the U.S. in response to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent killing 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis Wednesday morning.
Demonstrators gathered in several cities on Thursday evening, including Austin, Boston, Minneapolis, and New York City to express their outrage after Good, a poet and married mother-of-three, was fatally shot behind the wheel of her car during an altercation with immigration officers.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced earlier Thursday that he is authorizing the Minnesota National Guard to be “staged and ready” to support local law enforcement if necessary.
The ICE officer who shot Good has been identified in court records as Jonathan Ross, amid reports that he was also injured in a separate traffic stop incident in June.
Meanwhile, officials said U.S. Border Patrol agents shot and wounded two people in Portland, Oregon, Thursday afternoon during a vehicle stop.
A feud has also emerged over who will investigate Good’s killing after Minnesota officials said they have been cut out of the investigation.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said local authorities have "no jurisdiction" in the investigation.

The FBI has reportedly told Minnesota law enforcement officials they will not be allowed to participate in the investigation or review key evidence, prompting local prosecutors to say they are evaluating their legal options.
Experts have said the dispute highlights a central question raised repeatedly as federal agents are deployed into cities for immigration enforcement: whether a federal officer carrying out a federally-authorized operation can be criminally investigated or charged under state law.

Minneapolis mayor posts stats debunking Trump admin’s urban crime narrative
09:40 , Joe SommerladJacob Frey, who earlier this week told ICE to “get the f*** out” of his city, has attacked the Trump administration’s claims that he is presiding over a crime scene, reposting statistics showing that shootings, homicides and carjackings are all down over the last five years.
A similar point was made by local officials when President Donald Trump sent the National Guard into Washington, D.C., last August, who argued the presence of troops in the capital’s streets was both unnecessary and potentially inflammatory.

Everything we know so far
09:00 , Shweta Sharma- Protests condemning Renee Nicole Good’s killing have erupted across the US.
- In Minneapolis, some protests earlier on Thursday led to physical altercations between residents and ICE agents, with several people detained. The street where Good was killed has since become a vigil site, marked by candles and flowers.
- The FBI has assumed sole control of the investigation into the killing, cutting off Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension from access to evidence and case materials – a move that has drawn sharp criticism from state officials.
- The ICE agent who shot Good has been identified as a 10-year law enforcement veteran, with prior experience in Border Patrol and ICE.
- Separately, two people were shot by US federal agents in Portland, prompting condemnation from local and state officials and renewed calls for ICE to leave the city.
Who is investigating the shooting?
08:40 , Shweta SharmaMinnesota state officials have condemned the FBI for blocking them from participating in the shooting investigation, as the government has said Minnesota's authorities have "no jurisdiction".
The Minnesota agency that investigates officer-involved shootings said Thursday that it was informed that the FBI and U.S. Justice Department would not work with it, effectively ending any role for the state to determine if crimes were committed.
After initially agreeing to a joint investigation with Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), the FBI later “reversed course” and said it would not grant the BCA access to case materials or evidence, BCA superintendent Drew Evans said earlier in a statement.
Kristi Noem said the state has no jurisdiction.
"Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses and information collected, we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands," said Drew Evans, head of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Gov. Tim Walz demanded that the state be allowed to take part, repeatedly emphasizing that it would be "very difficult for Minnesotans" to accept that an investigation excluding the state could be fair.
Noem, he said, was "judge, jury and basically executioner" during her public comments.
Jacob Frey, the mayor, said: "We want to make sure that there is a check on this administration to ensure that this investigation is done for justice, not for the sake of a cover-up.”
Fox News host heckled by a protester, called 'disgrace to the human race'
08:15 , Shweta SharmaFox News host Laura Ingraham was heckled by a protester while reporting from a demonstration in Minneapolis on Thursday, a day after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.
Ingraham had traveled to Minnesota to host her program, The Ingraham Angle, from the state as protests grew over the killing.
She aired footage of herself at a protest earlier in the day, describing it as “pretty peaceful,” but said demonstrators “kind of nicely, but aggressively escort you out across their border” when she tried to speak with them.
During footage aired on her show, a woman at the protest shouted insults at the host, calling her “a disgrace to the human race” and repeatedly chanting “shame.”
Ingraham repeatedly asked why the woman was wearing a mask, to which the protester replied that her nose was cold and accused the host of being an “agitator.”
“And as we were leaving in our vehicle, they did what they can do,” she said. “They gave us all the finger. I think they secretly liked us, though.”

Democratic congressional candidate calls ICE 'domestic terrorists'
07:44 , Shweta SharmaConservative lawyer-turned-Democratic congressional candidate George Conway has lashed out at ICE, calling them “domestic terrorists.”
Appearing on CNN’s The Lead to discuss the Trump administration’s reaction to the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, Conway said the killing was “mendacious and heartless”.
“Absolutely horrible the way they’ve talked about this. I mean, the notion that Donald Trump thinks that this is somehow, or claims that this is somehow making the country safer is absurd. It’s making the country more dangerous,” he told Jake Tapper.
“It’s making people on the streets have to fear federal agents. And as we saw in Minneapolis, it’s just asking for some tragedy to occur. And that’s exactly what happened.”
He slammed Kristi Noem’s “ridiculous” claim that Good committed “domestic terrorism, and said ICE agents are the domestic terrorists”.
“She was just an ordinary woman who, with a six-year-old kid, in an SUV. And I mean, the domestic terrorists are ICE. This is what’s happening here in this country, which is just hard to believe. We have a criminal president running a lawless government trying to intimidate the people of this country through force,” he said.
A 'die-hard' Trump supporter joins Minneapolis protests
07:17 , Shweta SharmaA three-time voter for President Donald Trump has revealed he’s joining the anti-ICE protests in Minneapolis.
Cassius Pryce told MS NOW he is a “die-hard Trump supporter,” but is now “very disappointed” in the president.
“My message to Trump is, you know, let's go about it the right way. I know that we're trying to hit immigration and do the laws with that. Let's follow the laws, follow the Constitution, there's no rewriting that,” Price said.
He went on to push back against the Trump administration’s characterization of the incident. Federal officials have accused Good of “weaponizing her vehicle” and said the ICE officer, reportedly identified as Jonathan Ross, shot her in self-defense.
“Obviously, if you’ve seen the video, the lady, she did not try to hit Jonathan Ross. She was obviously afraid,” Price told MS Now.
Oregon lawmakers demand ICE leave Portland after shooting
07:08 , Shweta SharmaFederal, state and local lawmakers representing Portland have condemned the shooting of two people by federal immigration agents earlier on Thursday.
Oregon Congresswoman Maxine Dexter said she had received reports that two people in her district were shot by federal immigration officials in East Portland, just one day after the fatal shooting in Minneapolis.
“Both individuals are alive, but we do not yet know the extent of their injuries,” Dexter said.
She accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of “injecting terror, chaos and cruelty” into communities and called for an immediate halt to its operations in the city.
“Trump’s immigration machine is using violence to control our communities – straight out of the authoritarian playbook,” she said. “ICE must immediately end all active operations in Portland.”
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson also called on ICE to leave the city, warning that federal actions were eroding constitutional protections.
“We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts,” Wilson said. “Portland is not a ‘training ground’ for militarised agents, and the ‘full force’ threatened by the administration has deadly consequences.”
“As mayor, I call on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed,” he added.
City councillors representing East Portland – Candace Avalos, Jamie Dunphy and Loretta Smith – issued a joint statement saying they stood united against aggressive immigration enforcement and federal overreach.
“We will continue to do everything in our power to keep our communities safe,” they said, urging officials at all levels of government to do the same.
Minneapolis mayor goes on profanity filled anti-ICE tirade after agent shoots woman dead
06:52 , Shweta SharmaMinneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey issued a scathing denunciation of the Trump administration and called for federal agents to “get the f*** out” of the city on Wednesday, after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot a woman who was blocking law enforcement in her vehicle.
“We do not want you here,” Frey said during a Wednesday news conference.
Federal officials have accused the woman of being a “rioter” who “weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them,” something Frey said was “bulls***” and a “garbage narrative,” based on video he had seen of the incident. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also described her actions as “an act of domestic terrorism.”
“This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed,” Frey continued.

Jesse Ventura calls Trump ‘a draft-dodging coward’ and hints at another run for Minnesota governor
05:45 , Shweta SharmaJesse Ventura has called President Donald Trump “a draft-dodging coward” and hinted he may again run for Minnesota governor amid a surge of immigration enforcement raids in Minneapolis.
Ventura served as governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003 before deciding not to run for reelection. He’s a Vietnam veteran and former Navy SEAL. If not for his public service, some may know him for his wrestling career as Jesse “The Body” Ventura in the WWE.
During a visit to his alma mater, Roosevelt High School, Ventura had some choice words for Trump on Thursday, who was medically exempt from the Vietnam War draft with a diagnosis of bone spurs.

State senator says community is 'outraged'
05:18 , Shweta SharmaMinnesota residents are demanding a complete and transparent investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good and are calling for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to leave the state, state senator Zaynab Mohamed told the BBC.
She said the community was “outraged” by the federal government’s decision not to coordinate its investigation with local authorities.
“Our community is not backing down. This is a community that has been through so much over the last five years,” Mohamed said.
If federal authorities fail to conduct an honest and thorough inquiry, the state government may have to consider legal action to obtain case files from the federal government, she added.
Officer who shot Renee Nicole Good had previously been dragged by car
05:02 , Shweta SharmaThe Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who shot Renee Nicole Good was dragged and injured in a traffic stop last year.
Reports indicate the ICE officer who shot Good has been identified as Jonathan Ross.
Last summer, the same ICE agent was involved in a separate incident with a fleeing driver, according to court documents, CNN reported.
His arm became trapped in the rear window of a car as the suspect drove away, dragging him around 100 yards along the pavement. The officer suffered injuries to his arm and hand and discharged a taser at the driver during the encounter, the records show.

A transcript of Ross’s testimony from the June case shows he previously served as a National Guard gunner in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 and has conducted “hundreds” of traffic stops during nearly two decades with the Border Patrol and ICE, including encounters with drivers attempting to flee.
Trump administration officials have pointed to the June incident as evidence that ICE agents face life-threatening situations, arguing that such risks require them to respond with extreme force.
Vice president JD Vance referred to the June incident on Thursday, saying, “That very ICE officer nearly had his life ended, dragged by a car, six months ago.
“You think maybe he’s a little bit sensitive about someone ramming him with an automobile?”
Local activist provides first-hand account of Good's actions on day of her death
04:36 , Shweta SharmaRenee Nicole Good was participating in one of several “neighborhood patrols” organised by local activists to monitor, observe and film ICE operations, according to Michelle Gross, president of the Minnesota-based group Community United Against Police Brutality and a paralegal with the National Lawyers Guild.
The ICE agent who shot Good was among 2,000 federal officers that president Donald Trump's administration had announced it was deploying to the Minneapolis area in what the Department of Homeland Security described as the "largest DHS operation ever."
According to Gross, federal officers had ordered Good to clear away, and she was trying to turn her car around when agents approached her vehicle, with one opening fire as she was "trying to leave" and the automobile pulled away.
Gross disputed assertions by Kristi Noem that Good "had been stalking and impeding" agents' work all day.
"There was absolutely no justification for deadly force," Gross said.
"People are just exercising their First Amendment right to videotape police."

Minnesota shooting videos challenge administration narrative, policing experts question tactics
03:10 , Associated PressThe federal officer steps in front of the Honda SUV, parked nearly perpendicular across a one-way residential street in Minneapolis, with snow piled up on the curb.
Within seconds, he would shoot and kill the driver, Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three.
Federal officials said the officer acted in self-defense, that the driver of the Honda was engaging in “an act of domestic terrorism” when she pulled forward toward him and that he was lucky to escape alive.
Policing experts say some of the choices the officer made in that moment defy practices nearly every law enforcement agency have followed for decades.

Mamdani, who condemned the shooting, responded to Noem’s statement in an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.
“If that is following his training, then I think there are larger questions about the training that's being provided to ICE agents,” Mamdani said Thursday.
Noem has claimed that Good “weaponized her vehicle” and attempted to run over ICE agents in an act of “domestic terrorism.”

Minneapolis mayor says Trump is 'lying'
01:55 , Katie HawkinsonMinneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has penned an opinion essay for The New York Times, titled, “I’m the Mayor of Minneapolis. Trump Is Lying to You.”
Frey has called on ICE to “get the f*** out” of Minneapolis after an agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on Wednesday morning. Now, he says the Trump administration’s “false narrative about this week’s shooting, and the demonization of the victim, are only part of a bigger lie.”
“It wants the American public to believe that ICE’s heavily militarized crackdown across this country is an effort to keep cities like Minneapolis safe. It is not,” he wrote.
This comes after Trump claimed Good tried to “run over” the ICE agent who killed her. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has also accused Good of “weaponizing her vehicle” and committing an act of “domestic terrorism.”

00:29 , Katie HawkinsonDeputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has responded after Minnesota officials said they couldn’t access evidence amid the investigation into the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old woman by an ICE agent.
“Federal agents risk their lives each day to safeguard our communities. They must make decisions, under dynamic and chaotic circumstances, in less time that it took to read this sentence,” Blanche wrote on X.
“The law does not require police to gamble with their lives in the face of a serious threat of harm. Rather, they may use deadly force when they face an immediate threat of significant physical harm. Trump claims Renee Nicole Good tried to 'run over' ICE agent
00:06 , Katie HawkinsonIn an interview with The New York Times, President Donald Trump claimed Renee Nicole Good attempted to “run over” the ICE agent who fatally shot her Wednesday morning.
“I want to see nobody get shot. I want to see nobody screaming and trying to run over policemen either,” the president said.
Video of the incident shows the ICE agent, who has reportedly been identified as Jonathan Ross, firing into Good’s car as she moved it. He then appeared to walk toward her vehicle after it crashed a short distance away.
“She behaved horribly. And then she ran him over. She didn’t try to run him over. She ran him over,” Trump claimed.
Trump then played a video from the scene during the interview. When the New York Times reporter told Trump that the video did not appear to show the ICE agent being run over, he replied: “Well, I — the way I look at it...”
After Trump finished playing the video, he went on: “It’s a terrible scene. I think it’s horrible to watch. No, I hate to see it.”

00:00 , Katie HawkinsonSenator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, said she’s calling for “recommendations and policy changes to help prevent future tragedies” in the wake of the Minneapolis shooting.
“The videos I’ve seen from Minneapolis yesterday are deeply disturbing. “Immigration enforcement activities have greatly increased, leading to heightened tensions across the country. We need to ensure ICE officers have the necessary training and resources to safely—and with empathy and respect for human life—carry out these activities,” she added.
WWE star and former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura spotted at Minneapolis high school
Thursday 8 January 2026 23:48 , Katie HawkinsonJesse Ventura, a former WWE star who served as Minnesota’s governor from 1999 to 2003, was spotted Thursday at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, according to Fox 9 News.
Ventura’s visit follows a confrontation involving ICE near the school on Wednesday, Fox 9 News reports.
“Good for these people who stood up. They're teaching their students something, that we are a country, we have to be a country of law and a country of the Constitution,” Ventura told the outlet.
Footage showed ICE agents amid a crowd of people outside the school on Wednesday afternoon, Fox 9 News reports. The Minneapolis Federation of Educators said one of their members was detained during the incident and has since been released.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Fox 9 that agents were chasing an individual accused of impeding their activity earlier in the day. The chase ended near the school.
"While the subject was being removed from his vehicle, an individual who identified himself as a teacher proceeded to assault a border patrol agent. While this was happening, a crowd began to form and grow — rioters threw objects and dispersed paint on the officers and their vehicles,” the spokesperson said.
