In a recent crackdown, a restaurant with over 50 years of operation has been penalized for displaying an unauthorized halal logo. The raid, conducted by a joint team from the Kelantan Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) and the Kelantan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAHEAIK), took place at 12:30 pm Monday.
According to Kelantan KPDN director Azman Ismail, the establishment had applied for a halal certificate in 2021 but was unsuccessful. Despite this, the restaurant continued to display the halal logo, violating Section 8(a) of the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal ) Order 2011.
During the inspection, several items were confiscated, including copies of the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) license, the local authority (PBT) license, two banner stickers bearing the halal logo, and two shop signboards. The total value of the confiscated items amounts to RM150.
Azman emphasized that the penalties for such offenses are severe. Upon conviction, organizations or corporations may face fines of up to RM200,000 for the first offense, and up to RM500,000 for subsequent offenses. For individuals, fines of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both may be imposed. Repeat offenses may result in increased penalties, including fines of up to RM250,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
