
KOTA KINABALU: Surcharges or rebates imposed on users through the Imbalance Cost Pass Through (ICPT) mechanism implemented in Sabah and Labuan are in cents, not ringgit.
Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) Chief Executive Officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the implementation of ICPT is at a rate of 7.21 cents/kWh from Jan 1 to June 30 this year.
He commented on the confusion on social media, where some quarters stated that there was a tariff increase due to the implementation of ICPT of RM7.21/kWh, which caused concern among consumers.
ICPT is a mechanism approved by the Federal Government and implemented by the Energy Commission, which started on Jan 1, 2022, under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) framework.

Read more For Sabah and Labuan, the IBR will be implemented from Jan 1, 2022, to Dec 31, 2024, for the first regulatory period (RP1) of three years.
However, he said, the ICPT rebate or surcharge was not applied until 2022 as the cost of ICPT was absorbed by the government.
"On Jan 1, 2023, the ICPT surcharge started to be charged at a rate of 10.04 cents/kWh for six months until June 2023.
"The rate drops to 2.11 cents/kWh from July 1, 2023, to Dec 31, 2023.
"The surcharge imposed from Jan 1 to June 30, this year, is 7.21 cents/kWh," he said in a statement, Sunday.
