IDF soldier who spied for Iran is jailed

  • An Israeli soldier has been sentenced to five years in prison for carrying out espionage for Iran, according to an announcement from the Israeli military.
  • While completing his mandatory military service, the soldier sent an Iranian agent footage of missile interceptions filmed at civilian locations during US-Israeli strikes on Iran last year.
  • He was approached on Telegram and offered money for "various photography tasks" by individuals identified with Iran, leading to his conviction for contact with a foreign agent and delivering information liable to benefit the enemy.
  • The court took into account that the footage did not contain any information regarding military bases and that the soldier eventually reported his contact with the Iranian handler to his commanders.
  • In addition to the five-year prison term, the unnamed soldier received a suspended sentence, a fine of NIS 1,000, and was demoted to the rank of private.
