Once more, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad pressed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to substantiate his claim that he had the sum of money the 10th Prime Minister had asserted.
According to Astro Awani, the former two-term prime minister jokingly declared that if Anwar was successful, he would give the Tambun MP half of the proceeds.
"For that charge, I challenge Anwar. If he can locate the RM1 billion that is allegedly mine, I'll give him half of it.
"About the former leader who is accused of money laundering, what is he challenging to do, he used to be an 'ex-Malay leader' too, I think he should declare that he has wealth first... give an example, and he gave the challenge to everyone, "Most importantly at this time he doesn't need to tell others, answer and prove first the accusation that I have billions ringgit," said Mahathir.
Anwar issued a challenge on May 6 to former rulers and dignitaries who benefited from their rule to distribute the money to ordinary Malays.
This, according to Anwar, is due to the perception that the leaders in question are just interested in enriching themselves and their families during their various administrations.
However, when they are no longer in charge, they raise and fight for problems regarding the strength and unification of the Malays.
According to Malay Mail, Anwar asserted that Dr Mahathir's riches are an open secret and that the latter's family is known to own billions of ringgit worth of firms, ships, and aircraft.
During a PKR national congress in March, Anwar claimed that Dr Mahathir, a 97-year-old politician, had benefited himself and his family during his 22-year term as prime minister. Dr Mahathir is suing Anwar for defamation over these claims. Dr Mahathir has stated time and time again that only in court will he disclose his fortune.
