If Anwar was allowed to campaign from jail, so should daddy: Nooryana Najib

KUALA LUMPUR – Jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should be allowed to campaign for the coming general election from prison, his daughter Nooryana Najwa Najib said.

This is because opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had been able to do so in 2015 while serving time in prison, she said on her Instagram account.

“Why was Anwar able to but Najib is not allowed to?

“Is it because he’s Najib?” Nooryana asked in her post along with screenshots of two news articles.

One article from May 2015 was on Anwar’s wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who was then-PKR president when Anwar was sentenced to jail for a second sodomy charge.

The other screenshot was of a report yesterday stating that Najib cannot issue campaign statements from prison, quoting Prisons Department senior director Supri Hashim.

Najib is still the Pekan MP and his Facebook account remains active, with updates and comments attacking opposition politicians presumably posted by his account administrator.

In July 2020, Najib was convicted of corruption involving funds from SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

In August this year, he lost his appeal at the Federal Court against his conviction and sentence. He has to serve 12 years in jail and pay a RM210 million fine. Najib is also facing trial in other 1MDB-related cases. – The Vibes, October 21, 2022
