Malaysian comedian and filmmaker Afdlin Shauki has spoken out about his decision to enter politics, addressing critics who question whether individuals from the entertainment industry should be involved in national affairs.

In a Facebook post today (5 March), Afdlin acknowledged the labels often directed at him, namely “comedian,” “overweight,” and an entertainer who “should not talk about politics.” However, he challenged the assumption that those in the arts have no place in political discourse.

A duty to prevent mismanagement

Afdlin argued that many of the figures who have shaped, and at times damaged, the country’s political landscape did not come from the entertainment industry. For him, the core issue is not a person’s professional background, but rather their willingness to step forward and improve the system.

He clarified that his transition into politics was not motivated by a desire for power or influence. “As an established artist, I have already enjoyed a comfortable career doing work I love,” he noted. “In fact, politics has brought additional pressure and criticism into my life.”

Instead, Afdlin stated that his decision was driven by the belief that if principled individuals refuse to participate in politics, the arena will be dominated by those with less honourable intentions.

“If good people don’t enter politics, the bad ones will take over,” he warned.

Advocating for the creative industry

He also highlighted the struggles faced by many within Malaysia’s arts sector, suggesting that the current system often fails to understand or support those in creative fields.

While non-governmental organisations (NGOs) can provide temporary relief, he believes that meaningful, lasting change can only be achieved through policy reform. Consequently, entering politics is his way of attempting to improve the system from within.

Staying focused

Despite the insults and criticism he has faced online, Afdlin remains focused on making a positive contribution. Having experienced hardship during his own upbringing, he stated that his goal is to help others and work towards a better future for the country.

“You can call me whatever you want. My focus remains the same, which is to help people. I leave everything to the Almighty,” Afdlin remarked at the conclusion of his post.
