Medicine prices are expected to increase by 5 percent in the coming month.
The price for 10kg packs of imported white rice will increase by at least RM1 starting next month.
The European Union (EU) also has announced additional restrictions for Malaysians planning to travel to 30 EU nations beginning next year.
Malaysia used to be one of 60 countries that do not require a visa to access most European countries. From 2024 however, Malaysians must seek travel authorisation from the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).
According to the EU, the ETIAS program will be in force as a response to the global increase in terrorist activities, but I suspect “global increase in terrorist activities” is just a euphemism that the EU is using to downgrade Malaysia from a middle-income country to a lower income country.
When you are in a lower-income country, you tend to face increased restrictions in entering a higher-income country.
This is just the list of bad news for the country this week.
As the ringgit and our fortune keep sliding, we can probably expect even more bad news in the coming weeks.
As the people get continuously hammered by our deteriorating state of the economy, what can PMX Anwar and the unity government do to improve our condition?
Of course, if it can improve the state of our economy, it would be wonderful indeed, but there is a distinct possibility that our government might not be able to do anything much to arrest the state of our declining economy, at least in our immediate future.
Even the EU, I suspect, is predicting that the economic downturn in Malaysia will continue to worsen at least until the year 2024.
If PMX Anwar and the unity government can’t physically improve the state of our economy, what else can it do?
Well, I would like to suggest that if it can’t improve the state of our economy physically, at least our government should do something to alleviate our state of psychological distress.
How can our government do that?
Well, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, which is also known as Hari Raya Korban, that occurred this week, I would suggest that PMX Anwar and the unity government conduct a national sacrifice to appease the psychological stress that the people are suffering on account of the deteriorating state of our economy.
Historically, people have always conducted a sacrifice during a period of great stress.
Although the stated reasons for these sacrifices are supernatural, other than a supernatural effect, these sacrifices also are probably conducted because they have a calming psychological effect.
I truly believe that if the government really cannot do much to address our economic travail physically, an appropriate sacrifice that it can conduct is to throw a few crony billionaires or corrupt politicians in jail.
When people are undergoing a period of stress, to see an appropriate sacrifice conducted is indeed a time-tested way to soothe their angry, troubled and weary spirits.
