As Malaysia prepares to roll out its new MyKad this month, the National Registration Department (JPN) has urged the public not to rush to renew their identity cards, stressing that existing MyKads remain valid for all official purposes, including government aid and subsidy claims.

The rollout will be carried out in phases, beginning at the JPN headquarters in Putrajaya and 18 selected JPN offices through an appointment system before gradually expanding nationwide.

Priority given to holders of older ICs

JPN said priority will be given to individuals who have appointments as well as holders of three outdated identity card types:

  • Plastic Identity Card (KPP)
  • High-Quality Identity Card (KPT)
  • MyKad Version 1

Those affected are required to renew their identification cards within the next three years.

The department said the new MyKad is designed to strengthen Malaysia’s national identity system through enhanced technology and security features.

According to JPN director-general Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias, the next-generation MyKad will feature 53 security elements, more than double the 23 found in the current version.

Among the new features are QR codes for verification purposes, holograms, microtext, ultraviolet security elements, laser engraving, and a more highly encrypted chip.

Enhanced security features

The upgrades are expected to improve identity verification while reducing the risk of forgery and misuse.

The official launch date of the new MyKad will be announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at a later date.

JPN added that a detailed FAQ regarding the rollout will be published on its official portal and social media channels soon.
