International Islamic University Malaysia confirms Dr Solehah Yaacob’s service ended on April 27, revoking any permit to claim university affiliation.

KUALA LUMPUR: International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has confirmed that Dr Solehah Yaacob’s service as an academic staff member at the university ended on April 27.

In a statement, IIUM’s Office for Communication, Advocacy and Promotion said following the end of service, Solehah no longer holds the position of professor at the university nor entitled to claim any association with the university in any capacity.

“IIUM wishes to clarify that the use of any title, position, kulliyyah, centre, institute, department or any form of official affiliation with IIUM is not permitted,” it said.

IIUM also stressed that the use of any title or position associated with the university is not permitted in any form of promotional materials, media reports, publications, advertisements, social media content, publicity materials or other forms of dissemination, whether directly or indirectly.

“IIUM hopes that this clarification will help avoid any misunderstanding and uphold the integrity and academic standing of the university,” it said.

Previously, Solehah, in a video of a lecture shared on a YouTube channel, claimed that ancient Roman shipbuilding techniques were believed to have been learned from Malay seafarers.

She claimed that her hypothesis regarding the history of Roman shipbuilding techniques was based on classical Arabic sources.

Following the claim, IIUM established an internal inquiry panel to examine Solehah’s statements comprehensively and independently, in accordance with the terms of reference set for assessing issues related to academic integrity.
