MOUNT Ili Lewotolok in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province erupted again on Sunday, spewing a thick column of volcanic ash 400 metres into the air and prompting authorities to reinforce safety warnings around the volcano.
The eruption was recorded by a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 40 millimetres and a duration of 40 seconds.
The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) urged residents, visitors, climbers and tourists to remain vigilant and stay outside a two-kilometre radius from the centre of the volcano’s activity.
The exclusion zone extends to three kilometres in the southern and south-eastern sectors.
Ili Lewotolok has experienced several eruptions in recent weeks, with the latest recorded on Tuesday.
Authorities also warned of the risk of lava flows, rockfalls and hot clouds in the southern, south-eastern, western and north-eastern sectors of the volcano.
Residents in surrounding areas were advised to wear face masks to protect themselves from volcanic ash.
Mount Anak Krakatau and Mount Semeru were also reported to have become increasingly active on Sunday, producing volcanic ash in several areas. - September 6, 2026
