Illegal fishing: Boat detained in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a boat for violating fishing licence conditions, here, on Friday.

Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director Maritime Commander Nik Mohd Rizam Nik Mohd Fauzi said a MMEA patrol craft detected the boat fishing at about 0.6 nautical miles north of Kunak Tiga, at 4.20pm.

He said the skipper produced the boat’s licence and his identification documents as well as that of his crew.

“The local skipper and his crew aged 29 and 57 were detained and the boat was taken to the Lahad Datu Fishery jetty for further investigations.

He said the Lahad Datu Maritime Zone would step up patrol and enforcement from time to time to prevent illegal fishing and the intrusion of foreign fishing boats into Sabah waters.
