Illegal gambling: Two women fined

Kota Kinabalu: Two women were fined by the Magistrate’s Court here Friday for engaging in illegal gambling activities.

Nurizanney Parine and Norlin Kamis pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing the offence.

Nurizanney was fined RM1,600 or one month’s jail for buying two illegal lottery tickets of the “Hwa Hui” type on March 1 at Inanam Taipan.

The charge is framed under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The court also ordered RM73 in cash seized from her to be forfeited.

In mitigation, Nurizanney pleaded for leniency.

Meanwhile, Norlin, 24, was fined RM1,400 or one month’s jail for online gambling at the stairway area of a block in Taman Suria on April 30, this year, at 5pm.

The charge is under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The court also ordered RM20 seized from her to be forfeited.

Earlier, the court heard from the prosecution that that Norlin was arrested during an Op Dadu operation carried out by Penampang police.

A handphone was seized from her and analysed by an investigating officer, who confirmed it contained elements of online gambling.

In the same court, a 25-year-old woman was fined RM100 or three days’ jail for failing to satisfactorily explain cash deposits amounting to RM5,000 into her bank account.

Wennelin Ngadan admitted to committing the offence on April 30, 2021 at CIMB Bank, Bundusan, Penampang, which she allegedly failed to satisfactorily explain.

The offence is framed under Section 22A(1) of the Sabah Minor Offences Ordinance.

In mitigation, Wennelin, who was unrepresented, said the offence was due her negligence.
