Kota Kinabalu: A premises owner was fined a total of RM40,000, for committing three offences under the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024.
Sessions Court Judge Monica Linsua handed down the sentence on Piril Bulnio, 58, who pleaded guilty to the offences against him.
On the first count, Piril was fined RM10,000 in default six months’ jail for supplying electricity by taking it from Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SE) service line to four houses and a shop around his house area without distribution license in Manggatal on Feb 25, 2025.
The offence under subsection 8 (1) (b) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024 and punishable under subsection 8 (7) (b) of the same Enactment which carries a fine of up to RM1milliom, or a jail term of up to 10 years or both, upon conviction.
On the second count, Piril received another RM10,000 fine or spend six months in prison for installing bypass wiring from the same service line to existing wiring at his home without written approval from SE at the same place and day.
The charge against him was under the same Enactment levelled under subsection 61 (8) which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to two years or both, upon conviction.
On the third count, Piril was fined RM20,000 or six months behind bars for dishonestly connecting electricity through direct bypass from main supply without meter box to four houses and one shop near his house at the same place and time.
The court heard that Piril had collected monthly payments from the four houses and the shop for the said illegal electricity supply he provided.
Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) Prosecuting Officer Nureen Natasha Mohd Raffie appeared for the prosecution while Piril was represented by pro-bono basis counsel Jakariya Ab Jalil.
