SUKAU: This biodiversity haven is not spared from the menace of unlicensed tour operators who bring tourists and negotiate deals with boat owners, affecting local entrepreneurs’ income.
“If problems arise, it impacts all local operators. The authorities should address this issue as these touts are unlicensed,” said Mohamad Mal Noro, who has worked in this field since he was 12.
Located 358km from Kota Kinabalu, Sukau is one of the areas within the Sandakan area and the Kinabatangan parliamentary constituency. It covers approximately 4,972 sq km.
It is a top destination for eco-tourists seeking the “Borneo Big 5” – Pygmy Elephant, Proboscis Monkey, Orangutan, Rhinoceros Hornbill and crocodile.
