Kota Kinabalu: Immediate action will be taken against any social media content that violates the law or election regulations, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to hold discussions with the Election Commission (EC) ahead of the Sabah Election, as a significant portion of campaign activities is expected to take place online.

“One of the key points is ensuring that the EC can act swiftly if any content is found to have breached election rules, so that prompt enforcement can be taken,” he said, after presenting contributions under the Hawana Love Fund (Tabung Kasih Hawana) programme, Thursday.

Fahmi said MCMC will also work with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to brief candidates’ representatives on the proper procedures for lodging complaints related to the spread of false information or prohibited materials during the campaign period.

“In addition, MCMC will be meeting with Meta and TikTok representatives in Singapore next week to emphasise compliance during the election period.” During the same event, Asia Times Pulse journalist John Tambanan received aid from the Tabung Kasih Hawana after his home was severely damaged by floods in September.

John is the 31st recipient in Sabah and the 533rd nationwide since the fund was established to support media practitioners affected by disasters or hardships.

He expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its continued concern for journalists impacted by unforeseen circumstances.

“I’m very thankful. At least this assistance helps ease the burden and shows that the welfare of media personnel is being recognised through the Hawana Fund. I hope this support continues for other media workers in need,” he said.
