KUALA LUMPUR – An immigration officer was charged at the Sessions Court here today with seven counts of failing to report the receipt of bribes amounting to RM5,100 for allegedly helping foreign nationals evade checks by the Immigration Department at Kuala Lumpur International Airport two years ago.
Mohd Rahmat Mat Yusoff, 47, pleaded not guilty to all seven charges after they were read out before Judge Rosli Ahmad.
For the first to seventh charges, Mohd Rahmat, who was serving as a Grade KP22 Immigration Officer at the Immigration Department headquarters, was accused of receiving bribes totalling RM5,100 via online transfers from a man’s bank account into his own account as an inducement to help foreign nationals pass through Immigration Department checks at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2.
However, he allegedly failed to report the receipt of the bribes to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) or the nearest police officer at a bank in the Putrajaya Corporation Complex, Putrajaya, between June 28 and August 16, 2024.
The immigration officer was charged under Section 25(1) of the MACC Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 25(2) of the same Act, carrying a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both, if convicted.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Elyza Amira Habeeb Rahman offered bail of RM10,000 for all charges with one surety, along with additional conditions that the accused report to the nearest MACC office once every two months, surrender his passport to the court and refrain from interfering with prosecution witnesses until the case is concluded.
Meanwhile, defence counsel Nik Mohamaed Ikhwan Nik Mahamud applied for a reduction of bail to around RM5,000, citing that his client has a non-working wife and three children aged between 13 and 18.
“The defence does not object to the additional conditions proposed by the prosecution. We also ask the court to consider that my client has served with the Immigration Department for nearly 25 years,” he said.
The court allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM10,000 for all charges with one surety, together with the additional conditions as requested by the prosecution.
