MANILA, Philippines — Prosecutors from the House of Representatives on Wednesday expressed confidence that they have enough evidence to prove the impeachment charge of unexplained wealth against Vice President Sara Duterte, saying the case is supported by multiple documents and witnesses rather than a single piece of evidence.
San Juan City Rep. Bel Zamora said the prosecution could substantiate all four Articles of Impeachment even if the Senate impeachment court would not grant its request for certain documents.
“Definitely we have enough evidence to support each of the articles and even if we don’t have the documents that we are requesting for, we can support the prosecution of the four articles,” she said.
Prosecution legal spokesman Benjamin Tolosa Jr. echoed that confidence, stressing that the unexplained wealth case is “not hinged on just one evidence.”
Tolosa said prosecutors intended to present Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALNs), Anti-Money Laundering Council, Bureau of Immigration and bank records and witness testimonies to support the charge.
“It’s not dependent on one evidence,” he said, adding that the prosecution has “many documents” that would strengthen the allegations.
Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said each piece of evidence “will stand on its own merit.”
He said prosecutors would present the evidence in a way that allows both the impeachment court and the public to understand how the documents corroborate one another and form a complete picture of the allegations surrounding Duterte’s purported unexplained wealth.
