The recent formation of the Kedah state government, composed of representatives from PAS and Bersatu, reflects the evolving political landscape within Perikatan Nasional (PN).
This divergence of power distribution, as evident in the allocation of executive councillor posts, has raised questions about the implications for the relationship between federal government and state administration, as well as potential internal struggles between the two major parties in Kedah.
With seven PAS representatives and three from Bersatu in the 10-member Kedah state government, it is evident that PAS holds a substantial sway in the state's decision-making processes.
The contrast between the number of seats won and the allocation of exco posts has given rise to tensions within Bersatu, who expressed dissatisfaction over the relatively small number of positions granted.
This discontent underscores the challenges faced by the coalition in reconciling the interests of its member parties.
The division between PAS and Bersatu in Kedah could potentially signal broader challenges for the PN coalition at the federal level.
As political parties jostle for influence and control, the struggle to strike a balance between federal and state priorities may become more pronounced.
The differing National Day logos and themes for state-level celebrations further illustrate this fragmentation, suggesting that even the celebration of a common national event can be subject to regional interpretations.
The possibility of internal power struggles between PAS and Bersatu within the Kedah state government can not be overlooked. The discrepancies in portfolio allocation and executive councillor positions could lead to tensions as both parties vie for influence and representation.
While cooperation is essential for effective governance, the divergent priorities of PAS and Bersatu may give rise to competition rather than collaboration.
Moreover, the differing themes and logos for National Day celebrations at the state level raise concerns about the politicisation of a unifying national event.
While proponents argue that the people can accept political moves from PN, it is crucial to maintain a delicate balance between political expression and the preservation of national unity.
The use of distinct symbols and themes could inadvertently deepen divisions, undermining the spirit of unity that National Day aims to foster..
“Now, if the government launches a theme that is clearly political, ‘Malaysia Madani: Tekad Perpaduan Penuhi Harapan’ (Determined Unity, Fulfilled Hopes),' is that considered a unifying action?” asked Perikatan Nasional (PN) youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari.
In conclusion, the formation of the Kedah state government with a significant PAS presence and tensions within the PN coalition underscores the complexities of managing divergent political interests.
The allocation of executive councillor posts, the differing National Day celebrations, and potential internal power struggles highlight the need for careful navigation of state-federal dynamics.
Balancing regional concerns with national unity remains a challenge that the coalition must address to ensure effective governance and political stability.
PMX may need to take the lead and unify the nation before it's too late.
