IN recent years, Malaysia has witnessed growing concerns regarding cases of child sexual abuse and exploitation.
These cases are not only heartbreaking but also raise an important question: Are children being given enough knowledge to understand their own bodies, personal boundaries and how to protect themselves?
Sexual awareness education should not be viewed solely as a discussion about sexual activity. Instead, it should focus on teaching children about safety, respect, consent and personal boundaries.
From a young age, students should learn that their bodies belong to them, that they have the right to say “no” when they feel uncomfortable and that certain actions from others are unacceptable.
Many children who experience abuse may not immediately recognise that what is happening to them is wrong. This is because they may lack the vocabulary or understanding to identify inappropriate behaviour.
Proper sexual awareness education can help children distinguish between safe and unsafe situations, whether at home, in school or online.
Schools play an important role in this effort.
Teachers and educators can create safe environments where students learn about body autonomy, privacy and respectful relationships. Lessons should be age-appropriate and focus on protection rather than fear.
Children should understand concepts such as “good touch and bad touch”, personal space and the importance of speaking up to trusted adults.
The government also has a responsibility to strengthen child protection efforts. Besides enforcing stronger laws and punishments, more preventive programmes should be introduced in schools and communities. Collaboration between government agencies, educators, parents and child protection organisations is necessary to ensure children receive consistent guidance.
Some people may feel uncomfortable discussing sexual awareness with young students. However, avoiding the topic does not protect children. In reality, silence may leave them more vulnerable because they lack the information needed to recognise danger and seek help.
Protecting children begins with education. By teaching students about their rights, boundaries and safety, society can create a generation that is more aware, confident and capable of protecting themselves.
Sexual awareness is not about exposing children to inappropriate information; it is about giving them the knowledge they need to stay safe.
