Malaysia forms a new committee to tackle the flood of foreign imports threatening local businesses on digital platforms.
PETALING JAYA: Concerns over the growing presence of imported goods, including products sold through online platforms, will be among the issues discussed by a newly established Cabinet committee aimed at strengthening the promotion and consumption of local products, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said.
He said the matter was among the concerns raised by local businesses and would be reviewed by the committee as part of efforts to address challenges faced by domestic industries.
“Local entrepreneurs have raised concerns over the influx of foreign products, including those available on online platforms.
“We are examining all aspects to ensure the growth of a stronger domestic economy while increasing the income and competitiveness of local industries and entrepreneurs,” he said after officiating the Fashion Forward Batik Malaysia showcase at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week today.
Armizan said ministries and agencies would gather feedback from industry players and stakeholders for submission to the committee, ensuring that future measures and policies are aligned with the needs of the industry.
The committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, was established to coordinate efforts among ministries and agencies to encourage Malaysians to buy local products, reduce reliance on imports and strengthen local businesses.
Its establishment was approved by the Cabinet during a meeting on July 15.
