Kota Kinabalu:The Sabah English Aspiration Society (Seas) provided a new experience and books donated from the United Kingdom to rural students in Sandakan and Beluran to enhance their English proficiency.
Its president, Dr. Zainab Kassim, said Seas, established in 2017, has conducted various programs aimed at promoting English proficiency among rural students in Sabah.
In a statement, she expressed excitement that the society has now reached Sandakan and Beluran and looks forward to expanding its activities in the future.
On July 5, Seas distributed 150 books to the students of SK Sungai Nafas, Beluran.
The book distribution followed a motivational talk entitled “The ABC of Success” by Seas volunteer, Nur Hakeemah Burhanudin, 18, who is studying at the City and Islington College in London. About 100 students attended the motivational talk.
“There were motivating words and inspirational stories from each letter of the alphabet. Some were particularly interesting, such as T for tenacity, which many do not fully understand but is an important ingredient for success. The children had fun learning and were inspired at the same time,” Dr. Zainab said.
The following day, Seas also donated books to 61 student participants from Sandakan and Beluran during their Giant Book of Manners Artwork Competition at Sanbay Hotel, Sandakan.
“The pupils were surprised and thrilled to receive the books. We hope that such efforts will foster an interest in reading English books among students,” she said.
During the competition, students created vibrant and colorful artworks, ranging from comic strips to drawings with captions, all expressing artistic interpretations of good manners.
Dr. Zainab said the emphasis on good manners was the key feature of the artworks, which will be judged by an esteemed panel of local and international judges.
The judges will look for artworks worthy of publication.
“The top 10 best artworks will be featured in SEAS’s original publication, titled “SEAS Giant Book of Manners,” set to be published in December 2024. Winners from previous competitions in Membakut, Kota Kinabalu, and Ranau will also be featured in the book,” she said.
