In Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, a museum that only recently opened its doors has already established itself as a global architectural benchmark. The Zayed National Museum has just been ranked first in the 2026 list of the world’s most beautiful museums compiled by the Prix Versailles.
Located in the heart of Abu Dhabi, in the rapidly developing cultural district of Saadiyat, the Zayed National Museum has quickly become one of the Middle East’s new cultural landmarks. Opened in December 2025, this spectacular institution has now been recognised by the Prix Versailles, which recently unveiled its 2026 list of the world’s most beautiful museums. The Emirati museum took the top spot in this international selection celebrating the year’s most remarkable architectural achievements.
This distinction also reflects the United Arab Emirates’ determination to invest heavily in cultural and tourism infrastructure. For several years, the country has been launching ambitious projects aimed at transforming Saadiyat Island into a genuine regional cultural capital.

Exceptional architecture
The Zayed National Museum is first and foremost striking for its futuristic architecture. Conceived as a monument that is both visually impressive and deeply symbolic, the building combines contemporary lines, sustainable technologies and references to Emirati culture.
The project was designed by British architect Norman Foster and his firm Foster + Partners. The building is particularly distinguished by its five immense steel towers, which resemble the wings of a falcon in flight — a direct tribute to the tradition of falconry, deeply rooted in the history of the Emirates.
Beyond its spectacular appearance, the museum was also designed to meet the climatic challenges of the desert environment. The towers function as natural thermal chimneys, helping to regulate airflow and reduce the site’s energy consumption. Covering more than 56,000 square metres, the complex is now one of the most ambitious structures in Saadiyat’s cultural district.

Showcasing the History and Culture of the Emirates
Behind its monumental architecture, the Zayed National Museum primarily aims to tell the story of the United Arab Emirates and highlight its cultural heritage.
The museum notably celebrates the life and vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, regarded as the founding father of the nation. Through several permanent galleries, visitors can explore more than 300,000 years of human history in the Emirati territory, from the earliest archaeological evidence to the creation of the modern federation.
The institution also seeks to promote the values championed by the late ruler: preserving national identity, encouraging cultural openness and fostering dialogue between civilisations. In this way, the museum forms part of a broader strategy to position Abu Dhabi as an international cultural centre.
