As a management educator, I always impress upon my MBA students that leadership, in its true sense, demands more than business operational excellence or strategic acuity. It calls for a deep attunement to the forces of change, the ability to adapt, and the wisdom to balance complexity with simplicity. I found these qualities are beautifully encapsulated in the Chinese New Year's culture of harmony.
Historical evidences back by academic research at various universities has clearly shown that the world, including Malaysia celebrates is Chinese New Year 2576 Kongzili on 29 January, 2025 which aligned with the spirit of transformation, wisdom, and introspection that characterises this most auspicious moment in the Chinese calendar. It is grounded on ancient cornerstone of Chinese Philosophy that provide timeless wisdom and relevant in today's age of rapid technological evolution. (Iammuseum.wfu.edu>teachers
I remember having a sojourn with Scientist Dr. Raymond Ooi CH, Universiti Malaya (UM) Professor of Quantum Physics, and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, and a Director of Sejahtera Leadership Initiative (SLI). He said, “Harmony is the first pillar of the Taoism worldview. Just as a river finds its way to the sea, leaders must find pathways to align disparate forces within their respective organisations. Harmony in the workplace forters collaboration, innovation, and resilience qualities that are indispensable in business.”
Prof Raymond emphasised that “In leadership, that translates to adaptability and openess to new ideas. The rigidity of past leadership models that rooted in commans-and-control hierachies is ill-suited for a dynamic business world where change is the only constant.”
I fully agree that leadership in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) era is not about mastering technology - it is about harmonising it with the essence of what makes us human. One of the fundamental values of SLI is ‘balanced co-existence’ remind us that true leadership is a balance of strength and gentleness, innovation and tradition. This CNY, let us honour the wisdom of the past as we forge the future.
