PERAK Chief Minister Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has called for a thorough and detailed study before any amendment is made to the Federal Constitution to impose a 10-year limit on the Prime Minister's term in office.
Bernama cited Saarani acknowledging the argument made by some that limiting the Prime Minister's tenure would prevent individuals from holding power for too long, thus reducing the risk of power consolidation and potential abuse.
However, he also raised concerns about the possible negative effects of such a move.
"Some parties argue that the Prime Minister’s term should be limited because prolonged rule could create opportunities for one to seize power and potentially abuse it," he said.
"But on the other hand, if we prevent a good, effective, and visionary leader from continuing to lead, it could end up harming the nation by curtailing the opportunity to realise their long-term vision."
Saarani's comments came after a State Government Charity Programme for recipients of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) aid, which was also attended by Datuk Salbiah Mohamed, the state’s Women, Family, Social Welfare, Cooperatives, and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman.
The proposal to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to a maximum of 10 years has been discussed in recent days, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressing support for the idea.
Yesterday, Anwar described the proposal as consistent with the vision and policy framework for reforms under the 'Building a MADANI Nation' concept, emphasising that it is not a new proposition.
