Thermae Bath Spa gives the city of Bath a special character. As the only naturally warm, mineral-rich waters with rooftop views, it is the second-best hot spring destination in the world. With Roman heritage and a quietly luxurious feel, it makes a two-hour soak feel far longer and more relaxing.

Bath is one of those cities that does not need to try too hard to gather attention or impress visitors. The honey-coloured stone, the old-world charm, the crescents, all of it gives the place an easy elegance. It has the kind of beauty that lingers. In a recent study, one of Bath's attractions was named as the second-best in the world, and rightly so.

According to Icewear's Hot and Cold Therapy Index, Thermae Bath Spa in Bath is the second-best hot therapy destination in the world. Hell's Gate Geothermal Park & Mud Spa in New Zealand tops the list with a margin of less than 1%, and that speaks volumes about this British treasure that few people worldwide know about.

How does the rating work?

Icewear, an Icelandic apparel brand, developed its Hot and Cold Therapy Index by analysing reviews from over 60 locations. Reportedly, they analysed more than 54,000 Google reviews of these 60+ destinations and measured how often visitors used positive words linked to the experience, such as 'authentic,' 'relaxing,' 'transformative,' and 'invigorating.' For consistency and authenticity, they only analysed reviews written in English. They manually removed phrases like 'not relaxing' or 'not beautiful.'

The result? A list of the best hot and cold therapy destinations in the world. The ranking is more about real reviews than size, fame, or social media attention. In this list, Thermae Bath Spa ranked second among the world's best natural hot therapy destinations, with 70.3% of recent reviews rated positive.

What makes Thermae Bath Spa special?

Part of Thermae Bath Spa's appeal is that it doesn't separate wellness from place. Just like the Celts and Romans did more than 2,000 years ago, the spa lets visitors bathe in Bath's naturally warm, mineral-rich waters. The city's bathing culture is woven into the experience, and the spa sits comfortably within the ancient narrative rather than trying to replace it. Thermae Bath Spa is different from any other spa that promises escape, as it offers something more grounded. You're not just stepping into water, you're slipping into waters with a history, a temperature and a sense of place that do much of the talking for themselves.

What makes Thermae Bath Spa worth the detour?

Apart from the history, nature, and ranking, what makes Thermae Bath Spa really worth a visit are its location and views. The most famous part of the spa is the open-air rooftop pool, which overlooks Bath's skyline and the surrounding hills. This setting is even better in winter or the rainy season, when the contrast between cool air and warm water does half the work for you.

The spa's Main Spa session also includes the Minerva Bath. The Minerva Bath is the largest of the thermal baths and is named after the Roman goddess of health and wisdom. It is a 35.5°C thermal pool with bubbling jets, flowing curves and air seats. There's also the Wellness Suite for steam, heat and reset time. The details are more than just decorative; they are a part of Thermae Bath Spa's identity and history. For instance, the combination of grand columns, curved lines and mineral-rich water gives the whole space a calm, almost ceremonial quality without ever becoming stiff.

As for the practical appeal, you get a two-hour spa session that is usually perfect to feel settled in and doesn't feel hurried or rushed.
