In Switzerland, a discreet and unique beach, tucked away on the shores of a crystal-clear lake, is attracting travellers in search of nature and tranquillity. Little known to the general public, this unspoilt haven offers an unexpected change of scenery in the heart of Europe.

When we think of long sandy beaches, our minds usually wander to the coastlines of Spain or Italy. Yet, right in the centre of Europe, an astonishing natural site provides a seaside-style escape far from the ocean.

Around an hour from Geneva, Salavaux Beach stretches along the shores of Lake Murten in the canton of Vaud. Renowned as the longest natural freshwater beach in Europe, it extends for more than a kilometre of fine sand in a peaceful setting. With the lake’s crystal-clear waters, the surrounding forests, and the hills of Mont Vully rising in the distance, the scenery looks as though it has come straight from a postcard.

A refreshing escape in the heart of Switzerland

Although Switzerland has no coastline, its many lakes provide refreshing alternatives that are especially popular during the summer months. Lake Murten is one of the finest examples.

Stretching for over a kilometre, Salavaux Beach is particularly appealing because of its natural character. Unlike many developed beaches, it has retained its wild, unspoilt appearance, which adds greatly to its charm. Its pale sand follows the shoreline for an impressive distance, while the lakebed slopes very gently into the water. Visitors can therefore walk several dozen metres into the lake while still being able to stand comfortably, making it an ideal destination for families with young children.

The shallow waters warm up quickly as soon as the weather improves. As a result, visitors enjoy excellent swimming conditions from spring through to early autumn. Large shaded areas, grassy lawns dotted with trees, and the pine woodland bordering the beach also make it easy to find a peaceful spot to relax or enjoy a picnic.

At sunrise and again in the evening, when the light shimmers across the lake’s calm waters, the atmosphere becomes especially serene. It is a striking contrast to the often-crowded Mediterranean beaches during the height of summer.

Life around Salavaux

Beyond swimming, Salavaux is an excellent base from which to explore the Three Lakes region. Water sports enthusiasts can hire kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards and discover the shores of Lake Murten at their own pace.

The surrounding area is equally inviting for walking and hiking. Several trails follow the lake and pass through landscapes that combine forests, wetlands, and vineyards. Cyclists, meanwhile, particularly enjoy the routes winding around the lake, offering magnificent views of the water and the surrounding hills.

Just a few minutes away, the medieval town of Murten is also well worth a visit. Its remarkably well-preserved ramparts, cobbled streets, and lively terraces provide the perfect way to extend a day trip. Further south, Mont Vully offers stunning panoramic views over the lakes and the Fribourg countryside.
