In southern Europe, this destination, blessed with a prime geographical location, enjoys international acclaim thanks to its stretches of Atlantic-washed sand. Today, these beaches have received yet another distinction.
As the 2026 seaside season approaches, the Portuguese environmental association Quercus has awarded Portugal’s beaches the 'Qualidade de Ouro' label ('Gold Quality'). This certification recognises seaside locations that have maintained outstanding water quality over several consecutive years.
Portugal is one of Europe’s sunniest destinations throughout the year. With nearly 1,230 kilometres of mainland coastline, in addition to the Azores and Madeira archipelagos, the country benefits from an exceptionally diverse shoreline renowned for its environmental quality.
In 2026, 434 Portuguese beaches received this prestigious label, eight more than the previous year. Among them are 370 coastal beaches and 53 river beaches. From Porto to the Algarve, including the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores, Portugal further confirms its status as one of Europe’s leading beach destinations.

Gold-standard waters
The 'Qualidade de Ouro' label is awarded annually by the Quercus association on the basis of particularly strict criteria. To receive the distinction, a beach must demonstrate water quality considered excellent throughout the previous five bathing seasons.
The analyses are based on official data collected by Portuguese environmental authorities. Selected beaches must not have recorded any unfavourable results or pollution incidents likely to affect swimming conditions.
Today, this certification serves as a genuine benchmark for travellers seeking safe and environmentally responsible destinations. It also reflects the efforts made by Portuguese local authorities in preserving the coastline, improving water treatment systems, and ensuring the sustainable management of natural spaces. Portugal is therefore establishing itself as one of the European countries most committed to enhancing and protecting its seaside areas.

A country of diverse landscapes
The Tejo/Oeste region remains the country’s most awarded area, with 93 beaches receiving the distinction. Located around Lisbon and along the central Atlantic coast, the region appeals to visitors thanks to its varied landscapes, combining vast wild beaches, family-friendly seaside resorts, and renowned surfing spots.
Further south, the Algarve continues to confirm its immense popularity, with 86 beaches awarded the 'Gold Quality' label. Famous for its ochre cliffs, turquoise coves, and particularly mild climate, the region remains one of the favourite destinations for European travellers.
However, the strongest growth compared with 2025 has been observed in the north of the country and in Madeira. These areas are gradually gaining visibility thanks to the promotion of their natural beaches, which are often less crowded but highly appreciated for their authenticity.

Why Portugal appeals so strongly to travellers
If Portugal continues to attract so many visitors every year, it is above all thanks to a combination of advantages. The first is its climate. The country enjoys mild temperatures for much of the year, with sunny summers that are generally less oppressive than in some Mediterranean destinations. Even outside the peak season, conditions remain pleasant for exploring the coastline.
The welcoming atmosphere is also one of Portugal’s greatest strengths. Travellers appreciate the warm hospitality of the locals, the more relaxed pace of life, and the local culture that blends maritime traditions, gastronomy, and a distinctive way of life.
The destination also benefits from excellent accessibility from across Europe. The cities of Lisbon, Porto, Faro, and Funchal are all very well connected, often with direct flights from major European cities. This ease of access greatly contributes to the country’s success among tourists seeking sunshine just a few hours away by air.
