Sultanpur Lodhi Independent MLA Rana Inder Partap Singh led group of independent candidates have emerged victorious, securing a majority in the fiercely contested Sultanpur Lodhi Municipal Council elections.

Of the total 13 seats in the Sultanpur Lodhi MC, Rana’s group secured a seven-seat majority, AAP won five seats, while one seat was secured by the SAD.

The BJP and Congress could not secure any seats.

The closely-contested seat was marked by fierce rivalry between the Rana and AAP camps, as charges and counter charges flew, and things even escalated to police action.

Throughout the campaign, Rana and AAP Halka in charge Sajjan Singh Cheema issued regular statements against each other.

Just days ago, detention of seven workers of the Rana group — in a preventive action case against Rana’s and AAP’s men, by police — saw a day-long dharna by MLA Rana Inder Partap and his supporters outside the Sultanpur Lodhi police station.

In the results declared on Friday, Rana Inder Partap’s candidates secured victory in ward numbers 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 13. While AAP candidates have won across wards 2, 6, 9, 10 and 12.

Speaking to The Tribune, Rana Inder Partap said, “Guru Sahib has bestowed his ‘kirpa’ (blessing) upon us and people have graciously issued a fatwa (mandate) in our favour. No matter what anyone says, our hard work has borne results. It was me alone, against three to four parties – AAP, Congress, BJP and SAD, who were aiding each other on some seats. I’m grateful for the love shown by the people of Sultanpur Lodhi.”

The Rana group candidates winning at ward numbers 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 13, include –Ravi Kanta, Pawan Kumar, Gurjit Kaur, Amarjit Kaur, Sandeep Kaur, Simarpreet Kaur and Kashmir Singh Numberdar, respectively.

The AAP candidates who have won wards 2, 6, 9, 10 and 12, include Jatinder Sethi, Rajiv Dhir, Priya Dhir, Dinesh Dhir and Gurwinder Kaur, respectively.

From the SAD, Sandeep Kaur Gill has won from ward no. 1.
