Prior to the 2018 General Election, former prime minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad acknowledged that he and DAP were only working together to accomplish the objective of overthrowing Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Using the old proverb "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" as an analogy, Dr. Mahathir responded to the seeming inconsistency in dealing with DAP and PAS by acknowledging that DAP intended to use him because both parties had the same interests.

“We would not have secured a majority and Najib would still be the prime minister if I had not used DAP,” said Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

Which of Najib and DAP do we have to get rid of? "I used DAP for that reason," he stated in the most recent edition of the Keluar Sekejap podcast featuring former minister KJ and Shahril Hamdan.

When asked if these contradictions were Machiavellian or if they justified all political tactics, Dr. Mahathir acknowledged that one had to cling to these ideas to “a certain extent.”

“I once required DAP to beat Najib. We are currently facing a dilemma, and since our objectives are the same, I have concluded that collaborating with PAS is the only option. We will not succeed if we try to accomplish something while sticking to our outdated practices," he declared.

According to the New Straits Times, back in 2018, Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah, the chairman of the Election Commission, declared that Pakatan Harapan had secured a simple majority in Parliament to establish the next federal administration.

He claimed that as of 4.40 am, the coalition, which is made up of PKR, DAP, Parti Amanah Negara, and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, has won 113 seats. Barisan Nasional came in second with 79 seats.

He reported that Pas had won eight seats, Parti Warisan Sabah eight, and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku one seat. Hashim added that three independent contenders were elected to the Parliament. The August House has 222 seats in all. Since 1955, Barisan Nasional has not lost till this moment.
