The 'land of the gods' has always captivated tourists thanks to its rich culture and natural heritage, yet there are still hidden corners waiting to be discovered. One understated island stands out as an oasis and a new destination for a peaceful escape.

Greece is one of the European countries that attracts travellers from all over the world each year. Destinations such as Santorini or Athens are extremely popular, but a lesser-known island promises to be just as appealing. Authentic and distinctive, Euboea lies at the heart of the Aegean Sea. It is the second-largest island after Crete, yet remains far from the usual tourist routes.

An island territory that has preserved its authenticity, mostly frequented by locals, it is now a genuine option to consider when visiting Greece.

Euboea is a true paradise for lovers of nature and the sea. With nearly 900 kilometres of coastline, it boasts wild landscapes and coves with turquoise waters. Among its highlights are beaches such as Marmari Beach, Chiliadou Beach and Agali Beach.

An island of three faces

Euboea can also be explored through its geography. Each area has its own identity: the north, the centre and the south.

The north of the island is the greenest part. Sometimes nicknamed “the little Greek Switzerland”, this region is characterised by pine forests, mountains and renowned thermal spas. Travellers will find traditional villages here, along with a calmer and more authentic atmosphere.

Central Euboea is marked by mountainous landscapes and the presence of Mount Dirfis, the island’s highest peak. This area alternates between hilltop villages, hiking trails and historical sites. The town of Chalkida, the gateway to Euboea, is home to much of the island’s local and cultural life.

Finally, the south of the island reveals a more rugged, mineral landscape. With cliffs, gorges and long beaches along the Aegean Sea, this part is particularly popular with enthusiasts of hiking, water sports and unspoilt scenery. The villages of Marmari and Karystos are among the must-see destinations in this region.

Must-see sites on the island of Euboea

Chalkida, the capital

One of the most emblematic places is undoubtedly the island’s capital, Chalkida (Chalcis), considered the soul of Euboea. It is a city that fully embodies the spirit of ancient Greece, notably with several remains and temples dedicated to Zeus and Apollo.

Chalkida stretches across the Euripus Strait, and its seafront has become a major tourist attraction. The spectacle of the 'mad waters', which reverse the direction of the current every six hours beneath the old bridge, has fascinated visitors since antiquity.

The thermal baths of Edipsos

Located in the north of the island, the thermal baths of Edipsos are among the most famous in Greece. Known since antiquity, these mineral-rich natural springs were already frequented by Roman emperors and Greek philosophers. According to mythology, Heracles would come here to rest after his exploits.

Even today, visitors come to enjoy the warm waters, which in some places flow directly into the sea. Combining wellness, relaxation and coastal scenery, Edipsos has become an essential stop on a trip to Euboea.

Ancient remains

Euboea also has a rich historical heritage. The town of Eretria preserves several ancient remains, including an old theatre, Roman baths and archaeological sites that testify to the island’s importance during ancient Greek times.

Moreover, in the south of the island, the mysterious 'dragon houses', built from stone on the slopes of Mount Ochi, continue to intrigue visitors and historians alike. Their origin remains unknown to this day.
