From the rugged cliffside ruins of the Atlantic coast to grand, lakeside Victorian estates, Ireland's landscape is famously dotted with thousands of breathtaking fortresses. Here are ten of the most beautiful and enchanting castles the Emerald Isle has to offer.

Ireland’s history and folklore are among the most interesting across Europe, and much of it is tied to the country’s thousands of castles dotted around the island. With so many castles to visit, it can feel overwhelming choosing which ones to add to your itinerary.

From fully restored five-star luxury estates to dramatic, windswept ruins clinging to coastal cliffs, here are ten of the most beautiful castles to visit in Ireland, many standing out for their jaw-dropping architecture, spectacular natural backdrops, and rich history.

Kilkenny Castle (Co. Kilkenny)

This castle is located in the heart of Kilkenny city and is well-preserved. Dating back to the 12th century, this Anglo-Norman fortress has a unique three-walled structure overlooking the River Nore. Kilkenny Castle sits beautifully among sprawling rose gardens, providing a contrast with the fortress’s imposing medieval grey stone towers.

Cahir Castle (Co. Tipperary)

Cahir Castle is situated on a rocky island in the middle of the River Suir and is one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles. The fortress still has its original defensive structures, working portcullis (drop-down iron gate) and heavy stone walls that haven’t been touched by centuries passing.

Dunluce Castle (Co. Antrim)

For something different and more dramatic, Dunluce Castle is a must. Carefully perched on a sheer basalt outcrop on the North Antrim coast, you’ll find pure, rugged drama in the shape of medieval ruins, which are connected to the mainland via a narrow bridge. It’s so atmospheric that it served as Castle Greyjoy in Game of Thrones.

Malahide Castle (Co. Dublin)

For some ancient history, just a short journey from Dublin city centre, you’ll find Malahide Castle, which dates back to the 12th century and was owned by the Talbot family for nearly 800 years. This castle is surrounded by 260 acres of gorgeous parkland with a botanical walled garden, a butterfly house, and fairy trails.

Ashford Castle (Co. Mayo)

Up next is a castle that dates back to 1228. Ashford Castle is an impressive medieval and Victorian estate that once belonged to the Guinness family. Nowadays, it has been transformed into a world-renowned five-star luxury hotel. The castle is surrounded by perfectly kept lawns, secret stone pathways and the gorgeous waters of Lough Corrib. It truly feels as though this place has come straight out of a classic fairytale.

Kylemore Abbey & Castle (Co. Galway)

Tucked away at the base of the Connemara mountains, Kylemore Castle is a 19th-century neo-Gothic building and is often considered Ireland’s most romantic sight. The castle was originally built by a wealthy businessman as a romantic gesture for his wife. Eventually, it became a Benedictine monastery. The way its white granite facade reflects into the glass-like lake makes it a photographer’s dream.

Bunratty Castle (Co. Clare)

Built in 1425, Bunratty Castle is considered one of the country’s most complete and authentically restored medieval fortresses. The inside features 15th-century tapestries and furniture. As you wander through the interior, you’ll climb the castle’s narrow spiral staircases while admiring the neighbouring Folk Park, which makes you feel like you've completely stepped back in time.

Blarney Castle (Co. Cork)

Our next castle receives millions of visits to kiss the famous Blarney Stone for the "gift of the gab”. This 15th-century fortress is a classic in medieval design. However, what makes it stand out are the grounds. With the mystical “Rock Close” gardens with yew trees, waterfalls, and deliberate stone circles, it feels like stepping back in time.

The Rock of Cashel (Co. Tipperary)

The next castle has an interesting local myth, which suggests that the medieval buildings rest on a hill formed when St. Patrick banished Satan from a nearby mountain. The Rock of Cashel used to be the ancient seat of the Kings of Munster, with towering round tower, Gothic cathedral, and Romanesque chapel rising up from the green plains of Tipperary like something from a fantasy novel.

Doonagore Castle (Co. Clare)

The final castle on our list can only be explored from the exterior, but it’s still worth visiting. Situated near the village of Doolin along the Wild Atlantic Way, this smaller but impressive castle dates back to the 16th century. Admire its cylindrical shape with the Atlantic Ocean and the Aran Islands as a backdrop. Watching the sun set behind its silhouette is a bucket-list Irish experience.
