Bandits, uprisings, revenge… This historical series inspired by real-life outlaws is the perfect entertainment for fans of the European take on the western genre.
Looking for a new series to watch? This Italian-style western might be just what you’re after. Its name: Briganti. A historical drama that transports us to southern Italy in 1861, into a land devastated by revolts and banditry. Inspired by true events, the series draws on the history of the famous outlaws who left their mark on the unification of the country. An original drama that also teaches us a little more about a fascinating chapter of Italian history.
A journey into 19th-century Italy
The plot of Briganti takes us to southern Italy in the aftermath of the Expedition of the Thousand, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, the general and central figure of the Italian 'fatherland'. As the country attempts to unite under one banner, the southern regions rise up against the power imposed from the north. This period of tension and insurrection, known as 'brigandage', provides the backdrop for the series.
Above all, however, the story focuses on Filomena, a young woman from a privileged background who is forced to flee in order to escape her violent husband. Taking refuge among a group of bandits, she unexpectedly becomes one of the gang’s most feared figures.

A series inspired by real Italian outlaws
What makes Briganti original? The series draws (loosely) on several historical figures from 19th-century Italian brigandage. The character of Filomena is notably inspired by Filomena De Marco, nicknamed 'Pennacchio', one of Italy’s most famous female brigands. Married at a very young age to a violent man, she is said to have eventually killed her husband before joining bands of outlaws roaming the countryside of Apulia.
Another major attraction of the series is, of course, its scenery. Filmed in the magnificent landscapes of southern Italy — particularly in the towns of Lecce, Melpignano, Altamura and Nardò — Briganti is also a visual journey in its own right. An especially immersive Mediterranean western, now available to discover on Netflix.
