If the damning, doomsday “prophecy” by Kedah Menteri Besar Sanusi Md Nor is to come true, then the country could see a new government anytime before this year's end! Apparently, he had made the bold proclamation recently during a press conference in Alor Setar after chairing the state executive council meeting at Wisma Darul Aman.
Sanusi, who astonishingly has around 1 million followers on TikTok with more than 3 million “likes” to date, is known for his provocative statements and “mischievous” antics which often trigger controversies in the country, amongst which of course is his oft-repeated claim that Penang actually belongs to Kedah!
In fact, in a recent report by FMT he had openly admitted that it was not wrong for government MPs to retract support for PM Anwar by taking advantage of a loophole in the anti-hopping law; according to him, this is because the earlier decision of the five PN MPs to back the latter's administration while remaining in Bersatu was considered “constitutional” by the unity government and its supporters.
Apparently, the Kedah Menteri Besar’s remarks were a response to speculation over what has come to be termed the “Dubai Move”, where it was alleged that discussions took place between opposition leaders and certain government representatives during their recent visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In an apparent dig at PM Anwar, Sanusi then went on to declare that the unity government will not last for five years and that he expects a new government to be formed this year, further claiming that this was welcomed by the general public.
Besides, according to him, the people were witnessing a repeat of Pakatan Harapan’s “dismal” performance when it was in power in 2018, citing the alleged interference in Islamic affairs recently (by a Perak DAP leader); in fact he added that now it was even worse than their earlier 22-month stint in Putrajaya!
Indeed, while most other opposition politicians seemed coy in disclosing details about the alleged ongoing plot to bring down PM Anwar’s government, to his credit, Sanusi “confirmed” that the federal opposition is indeed plotting to topple the current federal government.
In fact, even former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had recently denied knowing or being involved in any plans to overthrow the current government, with a local daily reporting him as saying that he did not go to Dubai but was instead in Mecca and Medina performing the minor Muslim pilgrimage umrah with his family.
Furthermore, the same report, citing another local daily Berita Harian, had quoted Sanusi as saying that the opposition’s plot to overthrow the current government is actually aided by the loopholes in the Federal Constitution’s “anti-party hopping” provisions, which he noted was used by the unity government to get the support of the five opposition MPs.
Sanusi had also jokingly dismissed the so-called “Dubai Move”, hinting that it was actually held in Kuala Lumpur, adding cheekily that it should instead be called “Chow Kit Move!”
However, by reaffirming the existence of such a plan he unwittingly leaked the names of some of the parties allegedly involved in it by saying that it can also be called “Bera Move” or “Sembrong Move”, referring to ex-PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob and ex-defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein respectively?
What may be obvious though is that with the gaping loopholes in the “double-edged” anti-hopping law, the opposition seemed to have found the “perfect” tool that can be utilised to topple the current government; but is it that simple to get government MPs to conspire with them knowing that PM Anwar himself also has plenty of “dirty tricks” in his bag, thanks to his long spell in Umno - under Dr Mahathir?
Moreover, although Sanusi had appeared to “confirm” that the end was near for the Madani government, was the Islamist party leader actually speaking the absolute truth?
Or was he, a known rabble-rouser, merely employing “reverse psychology” tactics to sow the seeds of disunity in the country and to disrupt the government of the day from discharging its mandated responsibilities, so that it will crumble from within - now that the favoured “backdoor” seems to be closed and double-padlocked?
