Last April, a ranking revealed the 100 most enjoyable cities in the world to visit on foot. One famous Spanish city stood out from the crowd. Discover it here!
Sometimes, all it takes is stepping out of your hotel and wandering along a few streets to truly feel the soul of a city. Last April, the guided tour platform GuruWalk compiled hundreds of thousands of traveller reviews to create a global ranking of the destinations that are most enjoyable to explore on foot. Several European cities performed particularly well, especially those with rich historical heritage and lively streets.
In second place — just behind Rome — came Madrid, which managed to outshine major cities such as Budapest (3rd), Amsterdam (6th), London (9th) and even Paris (11th).

The city where strolling becomes a way of life
With its wide tree-lined avenues, vibrant neighbourhoods and remarkable architectural heritage, Madrid stands out as a city made for walking. From Plaza Mayor to the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral, every step reveals a new side of the Spanish capital — at times majestic, at others intimate and charming.
Its bustling shopping streets, lively terraces and mild climate also make Madrid one of those cities where simply going for a walk becomes a pleasure in itself.

A route to uncover Madrid’s hidden treasures
As well as honouring Madrid, GuruWalk has suggested a short route designed to help visitors discover the historic heart of the city in just over an hour. Starting at Plaza de Isabel II and ending in Retiro Park, this itinerary is guaranteed to leave you amazed.
Along the way, you will have the opportunity to admire Plaza de la Villa, San Miguel Market, the Cibeles Fountain and the Puerta de Alcalá. It is proof that you do not always need to hire a car or rely on public transport to appreciate the beauty of a European capital.
