Do 'holidays' mean 'cultural sightseeing' to you? If so, this new ranking from Time Out is sure to catch your attention: it reveals the most unmissable destinations for lovers of art and exhibitions.
After publishing its ranking of the world’s best cultural cities in 2026, Time Out has now turned its attention to an even more specific area: museums and art galleries. To compile the list, the publication surveyed more than 24,000 residents across over 150 cities worldwide, then combined their responses with the views of cultural experts. The verdict? Head to Madrid to discover one of the standout winners of the ranking.

Madrid, one of the world’s best cities for museums
Every year, Time Out takes stock of the most dynamic cultural destinations of the moment. This year, in the museums and galleries category, Paris claimed first place, with 91% positive ratings. Madrid followed closely behind in second place with a score of 90%, ahead of London in third place with 88%.
While Paris and London are already renowned for their cultural scenes, Madrid’s place in the ranking confirms the enduring appeal of the Spanish capital, famous for its world-class museums.

Three must-visit museums in Madrid
Madrid’s high ranking is due in large part to its famous 'Golden Triangle of Art', which brings together three major cultural institutions.
The first is the Prado Museum, one of the world’s leading art museums. Its collections span several centuries of European painting and place particular emphasis on the great Spanish masters, including Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, as well as Rubens, Titian and Hieronymus Bosch.
Just a few minutes away stands the Reina Sofía Museum, an essential stop for enthusiasts of modern and contemporary art. Housed in a former 18th-century hospital, it is home to Picasso’s celebrated Guernica, alongside works by Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró.
Completing the trio is the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Its collection covers nearly eight centuries of art history, from the Middle Ages to the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, featuring works by Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Degas and Edward Hopper.
