UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed criticism from DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng regarding an upcoming rally, urging him not to strain relationships within the coalition government. Speaking after delivering his New Year address at the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, Zahid emphasized that the rally, scheduled for Monday, aims to demonstrate support for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is currently imprisoned.

Zahid reaffirmed UMNO's plans for the event, confirming that the party would move forward despite objections. "Next Monday, UMNO will proceed with the rally as announced," he stated. When pressed on PAS's involvement, Zahid deflected, suggesting reporters seek clarification directly from the party.

The rally has sparked political controversy, with critics questioning UMNO's sincerity in upholding unity within the coalition government. Lim Guan Eng, in a statement issued on December 31, expressed concerns over UMNO’s collaboration with PAS for the rally, suggesting it undermined trust between coalition partners.

In a sharp response, Zahid dismissed Lim’s objections as outdated and irrelevant. "His (Lim Guan Eng's) time has passed. He should place trust in the current DAP leadership instead of stirring friction among coalition allies," Zahid remarked. He refrained from engaging further, labeling Lim’s comments as a personal viewpoint that does not warrant extensive discussion.

Zahid also used the occasion to emphasize the broader support for Najib, highlighting the involvement of other Malay political parties, including PAS and Bersatu, in the rally. The event coincides with Najib's upcoming appeal hearing at the Court of Appeal on January 6 regarding a request for a modified home sentence.

UMNO’s call for solidarity has drawn mixed reactions, with supporters advocating loyalty to Najib as a key figure in Malaysia’s political history, while detractors argue that such moves risk alienating coalition partners and derailing government priorities.

As the rally approaches, the divide between proponents and critics underscores the complexities of coalition politics in Malaysia. Zahid's remarks signal a firm stance on UMNO's commitment to its agenda while cautioning allies like Lim against actions that might fracture the coalition. The event on Monday is poised to be a test of political alliances and public sentiment regarding Najib’s legacy and UMNO’s leadership.
