Set against an alpine backdrop of striking purity, Lake Oeschinen in Switzerland feels like a reward earned after the climb. Nestled at the foot of towering peaks, its mirror-like surface shimmers in shades of turquoise, composing a spectacular landscape. A place where the mountains impress as much as they soothe.

In the Bernese Oberland, near Kandersteg, Lake Oeschinen draws hikers, families and lovers of wide-open spaces alike. Listed within the UNESCO perimeter of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch, this mountain lake can be reached on foot or by cable car. A simple outing that quickly turns into a truly immersive visual experience.

A gentle ascent towards a breathtaking setting

From Kandersteg, there are two ways to reach the site: take the cable car, followed by a twenty-minute walk, or opt for a full ascent on foot for more seasoned hikers who prefer to earn the lake step by step.

The trail climbs gradually through meadows and open slopes. Little by little, the valley widens, the peaks draw closer, and then the water finally appears below. This slow reveal is part of Oeschinen’s charm: the landscape unfolds gently, never abruptly, but in a series of rewarding glimpses.

Around the lake, several marked trails extend the experience. Some follow the shoreline at an easy pace, ideal for families. Others climb higher towards panoramic viewpoints, with greater elevation gain and sweeping views over the entire basin.

A lake in unreal colours

Cradled within a vast alpine cirque, the lake’s surface shifts from deep blue to vivid turquoise depending on the light and the melting snow. Steep cliffs, sometimes streaked with seasonal waterfalls, close in the horizon with a sense of grandeur.

In summer, visitors also come to swim when temperatures allow, or to rent a rowboat and drift across the water in rare tranquility. Along the shores, grassy patches invite you to pause and take in the mountain views.

An experience to savour, not just tick off

What lingers goes beyond the beauty of the setting. There is the silence, the crisp air, and the sheer sense of space. Some linger for a high-altitude lunch, while others continue their walk before making a gentle descent back into the valley.

In winter, the landscape takes on a different character, with activities such as sledging and snow walks. Whatever the season, Oeschinen retains the same power: that of a place that instantly makes you want to slow down.
