Whether you are looking to immerse yourself in maritime history, sample world-class seafood, or simply enjoy a wellness getaway where you can leave the car keys behind, Portland, Maine proves that the best way to experience America is one step at a time.

The United States is notorious for not being the most accessible destination on foot, with sprawling metropolises and vast landscapes meaning that most places require a car or some form of public transport to explore. However, one hidden gem of a city has bucked the trend. It has just been crowned the ultimate destination for 'exploring on foot' by EatingWell magazine in their annual 2026 Best Wellness Towns awards.

Portland, Maine—not to be confused with its hipster sister city of Portland, Oregon—is home to roughly 70,000 residents. While the city as a whole is incredibly pedestrian-friendly, its historic downtown core scored an impressive, perfect Walk Score of 100 out of 100, officially classifying it as a "walker’s paradise". This makes it the dream holiday destination for those who prefer exploring new cultures with their own two feet and soaking up the great outdoors.

Walking through Portland, Maine

Maine’s coastal crown jewel is steeped in history and exudes a quaint, delightful atmosphere. As you wander through the streets, you will be treated to charming Victorian architecture, historic cobblestone streets, and a bustling, working waterfront. The highlight for pedestrians is the city's network of coastal paths, including the famous Back Cove Trail and the Eastern Promenade Trail. These pathways offer kilometres of uninterrupted ocean views, where you can breathe in the fresh, salty Atlantic air while watching local fishing boats glide past.

Another spectacular spot for a leisurely stroll is Fort Williams Park. Situated just 15 minutes from downtown Portland, the park stretches over 90 acres and offers visitors dramatic cliffside vistas and the iconic Portland Head Light—one of the most photographed lighthouses in America. It is the perfect rest stop to pause your walking tour, throw down a blanket, and enjoy a scenic picnic.

When you work up an appetite, a visit to the historic Old Port district is an absolute must. You can head straight to the famous Harbour Fish Market on the pier to see local fishermen landing fresh Maine lobsters, clams, and mussels, or duck into one of the city’s award-winning, farm-to-table restaurants.

Exploring beyond the city centre

The city itself isn't the only place to get your steps in. Nature lovers and avid hikers looking to stretch their legs further should certainly add Bradbury Mountain State Park to their travel itinerary. Located just a short 30-minute journey north of the town centre in nearby Pownal, this park is one of Maine's original state parks and remains open to explorers all year round.

The best part of the park is its network of shared-use trails, particularly the popular Northern Loop and Summit trails. These feature relatively gentle, beautifully wooded paths that weave through dense stands of pine and oak before leading you out onto a massive, spacious granite summit. Standing at the top, hikers are rewarded with truly incredible, sweeping views of the surrounding Maine wilderness. If you time your visit for the autumn months, the canopy below transforms into a breathtaking tapestry of fiery oranges, deep reds, and brilliant yellows. The peak is also a renowned vantage point for birdwatchers, who gather here annually to witness the spectacular spring hawk migration.

For those who want to stick closer to the waterline, the region also boasts the stunning Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park in nearby Freeport. Here, easy-going shoreline trails guide you along the rocky shores of Casco Bay and the Harraseeket River, where you can watch for nesting ospreys under the shade of massive hemlock trees.
