Streets swallowed by floodwaters, cars swept away by a gigantic hurricane, and sharks emerging in the middle of submerged neighbourhoods: with Thrash, Netflix turns a climate catastrophe into a massive, high-takes survival thriller. And only a few days after its release, the film has already established itself as one of the platform’s biggest global phenomena.

Released last April, Thrash racked up an astonishing 37.7 million views in just three days. An enormous debut that immediately propelled it to the number one spot on Netflix in 91 countries.

Led by Phoebe Dynevor, who rose to fame thanks to her role as Daphne Bridgerton, the feature blends natural disaster, survival horror, and shark movie elements into an extremely effective formula. Even more surprising: the project was initially intended for a theatrical release before eventually being picked up by Netflix.

A perfectly crafted disaster cocktail

The film imagines a small coastal town in South Carolina being struck by a Category 5 hurricane. When the sea defences collapse under the storm’s violence, the streets become completely submerged. But another danger quickly emerges: sharks, attracted by blood leaking from a wrecked tanker lorry, begin invading the flooded areas.

At the heart of the chaos is Lisa, played by Phoebe Dynevor, who struggles to survive while pregnant and trapped in the middle of the storm. Alongside her, Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou take part in this ultra-tense survival thriller, where the characters must escape both the raging waters and the predators lurking within them.

The mix immediately recalls genre classics such as Jaws (1975) and Under Paris (2024), another thriller that became an unexpected hit. And despite its deliberately simple storyline, the film fully embraces its taste for large-scale spectacle and immediate suspense.

The film Sony let slip away

The story behind the project is almost as turbulent as the one unfolding on screen. Directed by Tommy Wirkola (Violent Night, Dead Snow), the film went through several title changes before release: The Rising, then Beneath the Storm, followed by Shiver, before finally becoming Thrash.

Originally developed by Sony Pictures for a cinema release, the project was eventually transferred to Netflix after several delays. A decision that may now seem surprising given the colossal success it has achieved on the streaming platform.

A huge Netflix hit despite mixed reviews

While critics remain divided, audiences seem to have embraced the concept immediately. Many viewers have praised the film’s fast pace, short running time — barely 1 hour and 23 minutes — and highly spectacular nature.

Netflix is therefore confirming a trend already observed in recent years: disaster and survival films built around simple, instantly understandable concepts perform extremely well on streaming platforms, especially when they rely on an idea that is both straightforward and immediately recognisable.

Given such success, talk of a sequel is already spreading rapidly. Nothing has yet been officially confirmed, but several comments surrounding the project suggest that this universe — combining climate disaster and marine creatures — could continue to expand. And the sharks, it seems, are far from leaving our screens.
